LOL, Surfeur, Vichy is a Region of France,(like Champagne) if I recall correctly primarily known for its water. In a historical context the Vichy has a totally different connotation and meaning.

When I said you had no culture. Vichy has never been a region, it's a town...

He most likely is referring to 'the Vichy regime'. And while the abbreviation to "the Vichy" ist technically correct, what this has to do with this thread, well ...

Well it was a poor choice of words, and Rifter obviously has NO idea about the Gestapo and that he not only offended Surfeur, but maybe a few other groups of people?

But about being a pitty that Ken put in the flags, I think it is great to see were forum members are from, and I don't mind showing anyone that I am Dutch and European.

@Lutz
Thank you for that post! I have nothing to add.

I hear a lot of hot air about 'spamming' and such instead of debating an issue.  Most of you people have no idea how to debate.  You don't deal in facts, you deal in emotions, in personal agendas.  When you debate something, each side presents a logical, fact-based argument to persuade the opposition.  That ain't happenin' here, folks.

Most of what I see that you all call debate is nothing more than personal opinions wrapped around whatever your agenda might be.  You don't step outside the box and look at what is appropriate for the online database without regard to your own wants or desires.  And then you add insult to injury by telling those of us who try to do so that we don't know what we're talking about, or you use the rules as a weapon to squelch any opposition to your opinions.

Now, we have forum blocking, and percentage of posts counting.  How wonderful!  Some of the worst offenders have blocked certain users, and constantly crow about how much 'quieter' things are.  Of course they're quieter, you've blocked out a big chunk of the discussion.  What did you expect to happen when you stick your fingers in your ears?

You're like a bunch of little children sticking up their hands like a stop sign - which means "talk to the hand" - because they don't want to hear anything that might be inconvenient or at odds with their preconceived notions of how things ought to be.

You disappoint me.

Do you also disappoint yourself?  Everything you just posted applies to you as well.  If you don't see that, then you have no idea what true debate is either.  I can, off the top of my head, name a few topics where you deal wit nothing but emotion and think of nothing but your own wants and desires.  You know what they say about people in glass houses.  Everything you said here rings quite hollow.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

How would ANY of you know what I know or don't know about the Gestapo?  If you Europeans weren't so terrified of even saying the word maybe we could have a discussion about what I meant.  Obviously, it is so taboo to even think the word, let alone say it, that you can't possibly have a rational reaction to it.  Just like when somebody here in the US dares to mention something about race, the hypocrisy of political correctness is so violent and so intimidating that it is nearly impossible to hold any kind of discussion on it.

Well, you all can continue to freak out over it, but I prefer to confront history and admit that certain things happened and that there are people who exhibit certain characteristics of those I made reference to.  Are you really that insecure that you can't even utter the word?  I really feel sorry for you if that's the case.

But, I don't want to overly offend anyone, so just substitute Police for Gestapo.

And I have to wonder at the usefulness of this little 'tool.'  What purpose is served, exactly? Merely counting the number of posts in a particular thread is meaningless.

It is not meaningless if a thread intended to reach some conclusion becomes rather large and has many participants. If there is a significant gap between the participant with the most posts and the remaining ones, it is a pretty good indicator for "spamming". If you doubt the numbers, you can look at the thread more closely.

Quoting Rifter from the Rules thread:

Tell me what exactly is the difference when 10 people say the same thing to me, and I answer each one with variations on my same argument.  You accuse ME of spamming because I said essentially the same thing 10 times in a row, yet let the 10 others off because they only said it once each.

If you don't want to express your view point in a discussion, but rather like to talk to each person individually, I suggest using PM or Email as a form of communication.

If you want to participate in a goal-oriented discussion, you don't have to repeat your opinion to every participant, everyone was able to read your statement the first time.

Or do you want the 10 people also voicing their agreement to each other individually?

Ok, I'll cop to being guilty in some cases.  Can't be human and not be.  But I don't run around with a chip on my shoulder for people I disagree with, and I don't normally initiate this crap.  I still remember the first person who attacked me without provocation because of something I said, which they got wrong by the way, but I don't hold a grudge.  There's a certain group here though, that can't refrain from attacking Skip no matter what he says, and a certain group that attacks me as being Skip's defender.  You guys can try to justify your behavior using me as the goat all you want to, but that doesn't change anything.  I have never been the one who initiates this stuff (except rarely), and I don't plan on starting.  But I can guarantee that won't stop some of you from attacking me or Skip for nothing more than daring to have an opposing opinion.

Its a two way street, sir.  If you don't want me to reply to each post addressed to me, then those 10 I mentioned above shouldn't all be posting the same thing to me.  Pardon me if I'm more than a little skeptical that such will be the case.

But the number of posts, as I said, says nothing about content of those posts.  I might post 25 messages which consist of nothing more than a yes or no to a  specific question, while the other guy posts pages of stuff and only gets credited with 5 posts.  Are you seriously telling me that I'm abusing the posting privilege merely because I have a higher post count?  As I said, without taking context into account, the number of posts is irrelevant.

You should ask yourself "why is there a group?". The fact that there is indicates that there are enough individual people here who have, individually, come to the same conclusion that some types of social interaction are unacceptable. This is not about arguing a point, but how you argue the point.

For instance, you love to call people names, as does Skip (to a lesser degree, however). Many (not some, many) people find this an unacceptable form of debate. However, when called to task about this, you and Skip are unable to recognise that it is a problem. Since I do not fall into line with your position, I am labelled a "yahoo". While I myself don't have a big problem with that, there are probably people who do.

The issue isn't the disagreement over a point, but the form that disagreement takes.

With a minimum of culture, you should have written :

Should we refer to Vichy?

"the" has nothing to do in this sentence.

Is that like "vichy-sois"?

Right.  But since this is an international forum, people from other cultures need to make allowances for people from cultures different than theirs.  For example, there are a lot of people who have notions about how things are in America that are completely off the chart, and as a result there are misunderstandings in conversations.  I know there are things about Europe that I don't get, but I still at least try to understand things before making a reply.  Some I could name aren't that forgiving, but I'm trying to be reasonable here, so I'll keep my mouth shut.
