Their is also nothing in the Rules that spells out colon/hypen or anything else as it pertains to the edition, but how does the program represent the Edition field by using a COLON.

That alone I would have thought would have provided a hint as to the answer.

Skip

Actually that one is a program option under -

Tools ---> Options ---> Display ---> Edition Format

You can choose between not showing the edition, with a colon, with a dash or between parentheses.

Forget:

That would be a local filter, which means that the data regardless of how the user wants to do it, should appear per the Rules as a colon. But that is not the case as far as i know. If that were true this would not even be necessary.

Skip

Common sense would also say that if this is the first time the issue has come up in a decade, it's been working pretty well for those that this issue affects.

It's because they've kept it quiet and out of the official forums until now. If it had been addressed through official channels it probably would've been resolved long ago.

Resolved? Are you serious? Have you seen these threads? It looks like it was resolved until this thread was started and now look at what you have.

I certainly don't blame them for unofficially agreeing on it to avoid this nonsense.

It wasn't resolved because they decided to take it upon themselves to go through other methods to deal with it!!

Of course it would've been resolved as sooner or later Ken or Gerri would've stepped in to say one way or the other. Although I prefer one option, I'd take an official view any day.

That's how I took it but thanks for clarifying

Let's face it, it's painfully obvious that official views are few and far between, and even when they come down rules aren't updated. Part of me applauds how those that this affects most handled this and made it a non-issue for many years.

I'd bet those that this affects are working it out now, and it will become another non-issue for years.

I'm jealous. I wish I lived in Germany and used this program. Obviously they can sort their issues out without the drama these threads seem to bring by people the issue doesn't even apply to.

I would further argue that this should be the same rule as episode descriptors because there is no bright line between them.

There is, if the OFFICAL GERMAN TITLES are written this way.

Apparently they don't, because a local (feels like I'm talking like a Lostie  ) has started this topic

Oh I agree that we don't get official responses as often as I'd like. It would save on all these 11-12 page threads of effectively "You're an idiot", "You're a liar"

While I understand what you're saying, I personally disagree. TigiHof's post that I've quoted previously basically says that they'll do whatever they want regardless of anything else. To me that suggests that they knew that it'd cause problems so they decided to not raise it through official means.

As I mentioned earlier, I myself have a handful of German titles in my collection so the issue does apply to me. I didn't involve myself in the German forums as as far as I was aware, it was basically just there to repeat what is said here but for those whose English isn't necessarily good enough to communicate their message.

This is absolute horrible and hurts the eyes.  If it would be an American title, you would understand.

From the cover scan of Blood, it appears titles are indeed written this way in Germany. I think this rule needs to be language/locality specific. Colon is the convention in English, but not all languages use their punctuation in quite the same way.

I think we kind of agree here. Is it right that it was done unofficially? Debatable, but probably not. However, even with that, I certainly can't blame TigiHof and co., I will even go as far as saying they did what was necessary (to avoid this crap).

I mean, honestly, that's why I agree with TigiHof. If things can be handled and agreed upon without the headache of a thread in the contribution forum, wouldn't you want to go the same route? I sure as hell would (and I do in a fashion, as I email people about questions I have, rather than start a thread).

I don't have many German titles (most of my imports come from the UK), and the ones I do I don't believe are affected by this. If I did have some, I honestly wouldn't care how it was done, because everything I've read leads my opinion to be that the way it currently is (with hyphens) is the proper way. Even with that, though, if the majority of people who own the titles said they prefer it with colons, I really wouldn't care.

Regardless, this is something currently not addressed by the rules, and I can't see how anyone can be accused of not following rules that don't exist (Kathy said as much more eloquently than me a few pages back, and I gave her a green for it).

True. Someone wasn't at the meeting.

But online it's always " : " to seperate the Edition! Or is this also effected by my local option?

In view of the fact that title capitalization is locality (or rather: language) specific, I could imagine that the use of colons vs. hyphens in titles, other than for episodes and music, would be declared to be a language specific issue as well. But only Ken or Gerri can make that call.

(...) When I confront situations , which seem unclear, I will look at the Rule,, the Online, even other collections to determine the answer. (...)

So, looking at the online database and other collections of profiles with this kind of German titles, you would have to conclude that the hyphen is the correct solution.

Me on the other hand, when I see a graphical enhanced title on the cover (in this case two lines with different font sizes), I ask myself the question: how would the film makers respectively the DVD makers use the title in normal (not graphically enhanced) text. And again, for those German titles I would conclude that the hyphen would be the correct solution.

Therefore both methods, yours and mine, would come to the same conclusion in this case.

BTW: I'm neither German nor do I live in Germany. It just happens that a vast majority of my DVD collection is bought from Germany.
