I have to say I'm somewhat surprised at the backlash this feature is getting. I for one love it. Most forums appoint users to do the moderation, but this system is a very clever way of ensuring self moderation.

As long as you treat everyone with respect and address your fellow forum participants the way you would address someone in real life, I see no cause for concern and I definitely fail to see how it would stifle forum participation.

Or, rather, I see how it could but only of the kind of participation I'd rather not be a witness to.

And even if there are some undeserved negatives thrown around, so what? You have to amass quite the number of votes for it to have any real impact anyway.

Skip - I don't see it destroying the forums because we have people monitoring the negative votes.  And if there is abuse, the abusers get abused.

I have no problem speaking and I'm not concerned about anyone, anywhere getting their nose tweaked.  Because I phrase what I wish to say in such a way that I doubt many will be offended.  And when it does happen, it should be limited to few people.  I'm still saying everything I want to, I'm just doing it while treating everyone else with respect.

I really don't see what's so hard about this.  Treat everyone politely and forget about it.  The system is here, the vast majority of users love it, it appears to be working great so far, the forums are a much more pleasant place, and we're even dragging old users out of the woodwork.  You're obviously welcome to critize it and voice your concerns, but there's very few people listening at this point.  I think it's time to move on to another topic Skip because I don't see it going away.

The trouble as I see it is that even when you treat people politely they cast negative votes against you because they disagree with what you have said, not how you said it.  I have no problem with someone voting against the way I say something.  If I have offended them, I deserve to get negative feedback.  However, I've had someone vote against me when I was being polite.  This person apparently doesn't take to criticism - no matter how it's expressed.  This, IMHO, runs counter to the reason for the reputation feedback system.  If I have been impertinant or impolite, shame on me.  But if you are incapable of getting criticized, shame on you.  If we can't criticize someone, we may as well not have these forums at all.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about.  Someone has voted against this post.  Would anyone care to enlighen me as to where I am being impolite or showing invective as Ken says would be justification for a negative vote?  It seems to me someone out there has some awfully thin skin and cannot take criticism of any kind.  If this sort of negative voting is what the reputation system is SUPPOSED to coutenance, I have completely misunderstood Ken's intent.

I am sorry, but Mark is one of the most respectful people in this forum.  I am surprised to see anyone say otherwise.

I'm sure I could find posts I've made where I haven't been.  I can even think of some that were directed at you.  And if I do it again, I expect to be slapped down with this new system.

But what any of us have done in the past is in the past.  This is now and there's a new system in place.  Why hold on to the past instead of trying to take advantage of this opportunity to turn things around?  This is spring cleaning come early and I say let's throw out the trash and more forward.  The place was starting to smell bad.

If it's an appology you're after, by all means, speak right up.

I can honestly say I can't see a thing wrong with your post.  I'm shocked that someone gave it a bad vote.  In fact it feels like this thread has been going in circles for a couple days now and I thought your post finally added something new to the discussion.

Is it really namecalling or invective to accuse someone of whining?  It may only be my opinion, but I don't see this in the same light as calling someone a Nazi.

If this is the way people are going to view criticism and vote accordingly, I'm afraid I would have to count myself on the side of those who fear that the reputation system is destined to stifle free expression of ideas in the forums.

It troubles me that someone can vote negatively without giving the reasons for that vote -- or giving those reasons to the recipient of the negative.  How can I be expected to "correct" my "bad" behavior if no one tells me what constitutes said "bad" behavior.

I'll second that...

OK, that's great.  But explain to me, if you will, why the following post got a negative vote and was let stand that way.  What's the point if we can't make and comment on our observations as to how the system is working?  Based on the reply it got, I think my observation was pretty accurate.

Dare I?  Yup, gotta go with it.  I have to agree with Skip here, based on what I've been getting myself in the way of votes.

Granted, this whole thing is new, so maybe thing will smooth out, but the initial indications are troubling.  Looking at the posts that drew votes, the negative votes seem to be coming from those who may be letting their agenda get in the way of their brain.  The ratio is about 9 to 1, positive to negative, but those post that got the negative votes make it pretty obvious who voted that way.

Just in case anyone wonders, I have NOT talked to Skip about this at all.  This is just my opinion and my observations.
