So, I was gifted this set for Yule.

The profile needs a lot of work; it's very bare-bones.  I really just have one question about how to set it up.  Each of the discs contain multiple short films, and multiple feature-length films.  If the set had only shorts, or only features, the rules are clear.  A mixed set is not clear, but as I see it, there are two options:

OPTION ONE
Parent
- Child: Disc One (contains all info on the short films)
-- Grandchild Feature Movie
-- Grandchild Feature Movie
-- Grandchild Feature Movie
- Child: Disc Two
... etc

OR

OPTION TWO
Parent
- Child: Disc One (contains all info on the short films)
- Child Feature Movie
- Child Feature Movie
- Child Feature Movie
- Child Disc Two
... etc

Ah, had this one on my wishlist years ago. You didn't mention whether all discs also contain feature films.

But for me, neither solution is correct. This is a box set. A boxset is profiled by creating a profile for the set, and sub profiles for each feature film. The feature film sub profiles are either UPC-based or Disc-ID-based, depending on how they are packaged. There are never three levels of profiles. The only reason we did have an in-between level in the past is that there were no alternate profiles for the same disc-id or UPC. And of course, if a boxset basically contained other box sets (i.e. one outer UPC containing 3 sub-UPC with 2 discs each).

If there really are discs that do ONLY contain things NOT related to any of the movies, or DO contain stuff related to multiple feature films, but not those features themselves, then according to the rules, you should add a bonus content disc subprofile of the boxset. Personally, I hate those profiles and always delete them locally.

Quoting the rules:

Create individual profiles for each movie in these Box Sets. Use individual UPCs if they are available or use Disc ID (read on a DVD-ROM) if not. Create each of these individual profiles in line with the standard Contribution Rules with one exception - Cover Images. If a film is individually packaged, use the cover images from that packaging.

Discs with more than one movie on a single side should be entered as one profile per movie. Use a disc ID profile, and as many disc ID alternate profiles as required.

If a Box Set contains discs of Bonus Material for individual films, do not create separate profiles for these discs. Add the information to the individual film’s profile as normal for a single film 2-Disc set. If there is a disc of Bonus Material for all films included in the Box-set, create a separate profile for this disc.

Yes, it's a box set.  It's a box set of short films and feature length films.  My question isn't about bonus material or "things not related to any of the movies."  The shorts are not presented as bonus material.  They are presented as part of the main content.  The main menu on the discs is "Play All / Films / Extras."

Under Films on disc one are:
- Two Knights of Vaudeville (11 min)
- Mercy, The Mummy Mumbled (12 min)
- A Reckless Rover (14 min)
- Within Our Gates (79 min)
- The Symbol of the Unconquered: A Story of the Ku Klux Klan (59 min)
- By Right of Birth (4 min, fragment)
- Body and Soul (93 min)
- Screen Snapshots (1 min, excerpt)

Under Extras are:
- An Introduction (featurette)
- The Films of Oscar Micheaux (featurette)

Each disc contains more than one short film, and more than one feature length film.

If this was a collection of all shorts, I would use disc profiles with episode dividers, a'la Chaplin's Essanay Comedies or any set of Looney Tunes.  If this was a collection of all features, I would use all child profiles with Disc IDs.  The rules tell us that "Alternate versions are not used for contributing profiles for shorts or episode-level profiles for TV series" which tells me not to create a separate profile for each of the short films, or the fragment, or the excerpt.

So each feature length film gets its own profile.

Short films are obviously treated like TV episodes if they're grouped in the same rule, which means parent profile and optional disc-level profiles.  The only question is whether or not to nest the feature length films under the optional disc-level profile that the shorts get, or not to nest them.
If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.

At first sight I'd be inclined to go for option two, using the Alternate versions feature for the feature films and episode dividers for the shorts on the disc profiles. I'd choose this option since the feature films are not "subordinate" to the shorts on the disc profiles - therefore I think the profiles for the feature films should be on the same level as the profiles containing the shorts.

Completely irrelevant imho. The rules don't care how the marketing department decided to structure the content. Any release containing feature films is a boxset, with profiles for each feature film contained and, if applicable, profiles bonus/other content. In such a box, shorts are considered bonus content.

As you say that each disc does contain a feature film, I would list this as:

boxset profile, containing a list of the shorts in the other features field (or, maybe, cast+crew, but I'm not sure this is covered by the rules)
- feature 1
- feature 2
... etc.

Unless there's individual packaging for parts of the box set, in which case I might create an in-between profile for each of those, just to be able to track the different cover art.
