I think it is covered in the contribution rules but I wanted to be sure so please let me know if I am right or not.
All the names, roles, title, overview etc. shall be listed exactly as in credits/cover, so that means I shall use all the characters from local alphabet, including the ones that are currently not displayed correctly in the online collection. Example: waiter/cíšník
I am asking this because I have downloaded some profiles from Czech locality and there are all possible variations of using the "problem" characters.

So the question is: contribute the data complete in local language or with "English-compatible" characters only?

Hi trenki,

I have no problem with national characters on my on-line collection. I have some polish, danish and mainly (obviously) portuguese profiles. All with national characters that display correctly.

Are you sure your browser text-encoding is well defined in order to support those characters at the on-line collection page?

I tried Firefox and Internet Explorer with various encoding sets but didn't find the correct one (my collection). I looked at your collection and everything seems OK. That's pretty strange.

Everything is displayed correctly in DVD Profiler, only problem is online collection. But that was not the question. Seems that it should be fine to use all characters in profiles.

I looked at your collection and I see non-english characters.  Mazaný Filip has the accented "y" matching what is displayed on the cover image.
Using Unicode (UTF-8) in firefox.

Same here (FF w/ UTF-8) and everything was fine in trenki's online collection here, all the Czech Characters appear without any problem whatsoever. Hence my suggestion.

I know that Skip. My question was if it is OK to include these characters in the profiles or not.

You picked the wrong character guys
Accented "y" is OK. Try titles in #393 (should be zúctování), 386 (Úcastníci), 357 (príliš). Only some of the Czech characters are wrong (special c, z, t...).  I am using UTF-8 with Firefox too.
As I said before, I don't question these characters, I just want to know if I shall contribute Czech profiles entirely in Czech language (including Czech names in Cast and Crew) which I think the answer is "yes".

It is not just OK. It is obligatory if you follow the rules.
Eg. rules say about cast names:
Quote:
For any film with standard credits, take the actor information from the end credits only, with names and roles listed exactly as they are in the credits and in exactly the same order credited.

Cool, very soon the cast lists of many R3 DVDs could be all gibberish

Well, I assume the Rules committee had only the Latin alphabet (with all possible accents and additions) in mind when the Rules were written.

No, the Rules committee didn't... It's a program limitation.

I wouldn't mind not being able to actually read the Credits of my R3 profiles (if they were proper Chinese or Japanese), but as the program doesn't support those character sets (yet), all we would see is gibberish or question marks...

While I probably would have to keep purely local profiles, having the software support those would put an end to all those Asian name discussions and create a whole batch of new problems for the linking issue...

Other than that I agree with you of course, it should be as credited. If there is uncertainty whether the character set is supported, just contribute and watch the votes...

Achim is correct the Rules Team could only deal with what the Program could do.

Trenki,

There is a setting in Windows that determines what code page to use for non-unicode programs. Profiles with special characters that look fine on your system may have those characters substituted on systems set up to use a different code page.

I am using the standard English language settings and when I enter or copy Czech text into Profiler it accepts all letters with cárka as well as š and ž (s and z with hácek). The other diacritics are simply stripped off, leaving the unaccented variants of the characters.

When I download one of your profiles, only the characters with cárka appear as they should. The other special characters are substituted. Similarly I would guess you will not see š and ž in a profile I have submitted, due to our using different code pages when running Profiler.

To address your original question, most of the users having Czech or Slovak DVDs are likely to use the same Windows language settings as you and should have no problem with character substitution, so go ahead and use the local characters in your contributions. And feel free to update any profile I have submitted with the full local alphabet as well.

Dag
