You would expect to find a barcode on every dvdcover, but of course this isn't so.  I suspect that EAN/UPC wasn't used before a certain date(?) and that a ean/upc-code has to be granted and paid for.  I am experiencing huge problems with cataloging separate movies from dvd-boxes with only one code to be found on each carton box.  I am not sure if American movies automatically get a code per box, but this isn't always the case for French, Russian, etc...  We should have to be able to avoid using UPC/EAN codes by some kind of subclassification, because at the moment the possibility to add dvd's is too rigid.

Collection Gabin Studio Canal
EAN 3339161277394
with 5 separate movietitles from different years/directors
and you can't use the same EAN-code twice.

The only other thing you can do do is adding these dvd's as discs under one title and this can't be called very useful I think.

Can you not use the " Disc ID" method for each individual DVD in the set? or are they all on one DVD?

I am thinking of a collection of dvd's in separate keep cases in one box.  Cases aren't marked with an EAN code and you will only find one code on the collectionbox.  In this new version you can't add a dvd without a EAN code and of course you can't make them up.

I can only find one lopehole, if you should use "000000000000" as code it is accepted, but I imagine that this can be risky.  I have only tested this once.  What happens if you use this more then once?

OK, so enter the complete collection as a (parent) box set using the EAN, then each DVD as a child by the "add Inserted Disc" method. This generates a "Disc ID" for the current DVD in your drive, which replaces the EAN, and gives you a seperate profile for each DVD, which is linked to the parent.

However this does not work if there are more than one movie (assuming we're talking non-TV stuff here) on the same DVD. In this case you can use episode dividers, or generate manual IDs as you have done, bearing in mind that they must not be contibuted.

Once you got the first profile in your local DB (using your "fake EAN" of 000000000000), then DVDP won't let you add another using the same fake EAN - it's tells you that you've already got one!

Interestingly, the are two entries in the online DB for 0000000000000 (13 digits!)

It is also blatently against the Rule: "Do not contribute titles with "made up" or otherwise inaccurate UPCs." which you mention (so you know about) but then obviously ignore as you try to find a loophole!

EANS/UPCs were about loooong before DVDs; they aren't always used in certain countries but it's nothing to do with age.
Quite often multiple keepcases in a set will not have EANs on then (in the UK, unlike the US, they are often removed because this should stop shopkeepers breaking the set and selling them separately (which is not permitted)), this is nothign new and has been dealt with by DVDP within the Rules for ages.

The correct course is to add the EAN of the box as the parent profile then add each of the child profiles by Disc-ID, as described by Mole.

I overlooked that, dvd's that it can also be meant for dvd's not being sold separately, although you are not always informed, buying a dvd through Ebay for instance.

I have read the contribution rules, I would like/love to add separate subprofiles in this new program by disc-id when there isn't an EAN code available on the box, but I can't find it in this program.  You must have a DVD-ROM and it should able to select it while adding DVD's.  I can see that I am only able to add by EAN number and to search by title when available.  You always seems to be able to add by EAN.  I also have been looking for a way to duplicate the mother profile internally as to make separate baby profiles for each disc, but at the moment I don't see it.  If I have tried the 000000000000 EAN once it was only as a test, being frustated not being able to add a dvd without EAN number in the new system.

Make sure, in Tools>Options, that your DVD-ROM drive is set in DVD Profiler so it can find the DVD.

I do not have it either. Originally I did start the program with AnyDVD running (and hence add by ID disabled), but even without AnyDVD active, the option is not available. Strangely enough, it does show the ID in the disc tab (which has been enough so far, as this allowed me to identify the correct DVD to add by title - and it's the only DVD I had to add this way).

While not necessarily true, the mention of buying through EBay, does raise the immediate red flag of potential piracy which would not be acceptable for Contribution by ANY means. Unfortunately a LOT of pirates do business through EBay and snag many an unsuspectig customer into buying something that "Gee, I want that" and it is not available anywhere else...and the customer never says to himself why can't I buy it anyplace else. Buy with caution.

That's interesting, I don't have this option to add by disc-id.  I only have 3 options: adding by EAN, adding by title and forthcoming releases and my DVD-ROM is added in tools-options.  I am working in a Dutch frame.  I can't imagine that there is a general difference concerning the locality.  I am working with the latest version, is there something that I am missing here?

Do you have 'anydvd' running, if so add by disk-id is disabled because 'anydvd' changes the disk-id.

So AnyDVD is the great culprit.  You are 100% right.  I disabled it now and now it seems to work.  You saved my day.  Thanks a million.

I'm still puzzled as to adding discs from boxsets.

I am trying to put in Alien Quadrilogy (R2). The boxset itself goes in fine - enter the EAN, and it's recognised. Then I try to add the component discs. I put in the Alien disc - not recognised. v3 won't let me create a new profile based on the disc ID, and of course the individual disc does not have its own EAN. What now?

As the individual discs in the Quadrilogy boxset are not individually packaged (i.e. the boxset is like a big digipak), is there just supposed to be one profile for it?

Thanks,

A.

No they are child profiles - how they are packaged has nothing to do with whether it is a Box Set by the Rules (it's just a confusing term).

It's a problem for you locally as other people can do this.

I am assuming the disc you put in isn't recognised because that one is not yet in the database (note that the profile will/should be under the disc ID for the Film disc, not it's extras one.

V3 should let you create a new profile by Disc ID if you are not running AnyDVD or similar software (turning it off as mentioned abovce should work)

What is the EAN of the main profile you are using? which region?
If you go to 'Add DVD' and do 'preview' it should show you the list of box set contents and then you can match those up with the online database (if they are in there) when adding by title.

If it helps you to dissect the two uses of the term Boxset, the Case type refers to the physical case, while the Other Boxset deals with Content not packaging.
