OK - I've had this movie scene stuck in my head for years and I have no clue what film it is from.  I was hoping maybe some (at least one) of you have seen it and can identify it.

In this film (which was on steady rotation on HBO in the mid '80's) a mother and her kids of various ages were taking refuge in a cave.  I remember them sharpening sticks and placing them in a trench around the cave to protect them from... well... I can't remember from what or who.  I think the film tooko place in Austrailia or some other rough contry.

I know it's not a lot to go on, but it's all I got.  I remember getting up at like 4 in the morning to watch the film a couple times.  And I don't even remember if the film was any good.

Anyone?

You might check these and see if any of them are the one you are looking for.

The Gods Must Be Crazy - I don't remember a cave in this one though
Quest For Fire
Red Dawn - I don't remember a mom with her kids
Journey of Natty Gann - eh, maybe not
Cherry 2000 - weird but maybe

Thanks for the effort, Dan, but unfortunately none of those are it.  It's not a horror film, but I remember it being pretty dark and bloody.  It was contemporary for its time (it took place in the present).

Anyone know if one could get a listing for films shown on HBO from June 1987 to December 1987 (I know for sure that I watched it somewhere in there).

Was it Fortress perhaps? That was filmed in Australia and they used to show it quite often on HBO back in the day.

It was Fortress, an Australian TV movie made in 1986.  Rachel Ward played a teacher in a rural school, who was forced into the bush with her 9 students to escape some murderers.  Rarely seen, and one of Ward's earlier parts, but excellent nonetheless.

YOU FREAKIN' ROCK!

I knew I'd recognize it as soon as I heard (or read) the title.  I've been trying to figure out what movie this was since about 1991 with no luck at all.  Now I can finally get a good night's sleep.  Thanks a million.

If you follw the IMDb link to the film you will find several stories just like mine... people who saw the movie in their youth, permanently scarred, and unable to remember the title... I guess I was never really alone after all...

Now... to find it on DVD..

The Region 1 DVD is pretty easy to find, and cheap. It was released by HBO Video only last year, and is actually presented in anamorphic widescreen!

Just got it in the mail today.  I can't wait to check it out and see if it is still as disturbing as it was 20 years ago.

Hopefully you'll have better luck than I had with a similar situation. For me, it was the movie Dark Star.  I saw this when I was pretty young and absolutely loved it.  Then as an adult, I found it again and had to have it.

Oh man....

Nooooo.... unfortunately I've had to work a crazy schedule this week, so not much movie-watching time.  I'll let you know when I do.
