| Posted: | | | | In upgrading to DVP3 my DVD "Brutti, sporchi e cattivi",(Italian movie) with EAN 9 789056 751789 (full number) on its cover was 'translated' to 4 789056 751789. Starting with 4 instead of 9. At first I did not notice this, but someone protested and advised to delete this wrong EAN. In trying to contribute with the correct EAN I was confronted with the denyal "this is not an acceptable EAN", so I am unable to make my contribution. The same DVD (with slightly different cover, but the same EAN as mine) is now in the database with EAN 9 789056 751784! EAN with a 4 at the end instead of the 9 that is on the cover (you can see on the backsidecover from this contribution that it is really a 9!) What is happening here and how to cope with this? |

Proceed create the new profile with the correct UPC #, then we will have to work on getting the other one removed since the UPC does not match the image, it violates the Rules. | Posted: | | | | FWIW, whilst I 100% agree with Skip, it is really the fault of the DVD distributor there is a problem because: 1) 9 789056 751789 is an illegal code (the checksum is incorrect: as you may surmise from what is there it should be a 4) 2) 978 at the beginning of the code means it is reserved for ISBN numbering which is supposed to be only for books It may be worth seeing if you can get someone to scan the barcode incase they have printed the number incorrectly but the barcode actually indicates a 4... of course, if that is the case I don't know what the Rules would say is correct; the barcode or the number printed underneath | | | It is dangerous to be right in matters where established men are wrong |

| Posted: | | | | I am paying attention, Skip! I have made the profile - with the EAN that is on the cover - for my own collection. In starting to do this you can click your way through and make the profile for yourself. The problem is contributing it to the main database. When I try to do this, I simply get an ERROR message with the text DVD Profiler cannot accept the EAN, Check the EAN etc. . The only option is to click OK and no contribution is possible. Simon |

| Posted: | | | | I think this thing is not quite uncommon. I have 4 DVDs with incorrect barcodes, both printed and when you scan them. Don't think they are in the database yet, so I guess they could be contributed via disc ID. Maybe this is also the solution for this DVD posing as a book? | | | --- ¡Hola! |

I have lots of DVD's beginning with 978 (most of distributor Homescreen) Simon |

| Posted: | | | | The DVD also has an ISBN on the backcover: 90-5675-176-X. Wouldn't that mean that the EAN for this DVD should have been 9789056751760?
Not that it really matters, the main problem remains how to contribute DVD's like this without making up the EAN/UPC. There's already two threads about this at the moment.

| Posted: | | | | I'm tempted to say use the disc id, but you could always contact Ken to see what his opinion is, he may have missed the thread. He's got to sleep sometime... | | | IVS Registered: January 2, 2002 |

| Posted: | | | | At the start of this thread I posed 2 questions. What is happening here and how to cope with this. The first question seems to be answered; the EAN on the cover of 'Brutti, sporchi e cattivi' is wrong, it does not represent the barcode correctly, and because the EAN is wrong it is impossible to contribute the profile to the main database. In the other thread on this topic other DVD's are mentioned with similar problems. There is however no clear answer to my second question. How to cope with this. At this moment the DVD is represented in the main database with two entries. One under the EAN 4 789056 7517789, which is clearly wrong and was created in the transition from 2.4 to 3. This entry should be removed! The second under EAN 9 789056 751784 and this seems to be the correct translation of the barcode, but is not on the cover (there with 9 at the end). As a solution three suggestions are heard: (1)contribute under the disc ID; (2) contribute under the 'correct' EAN that is derived from the barcode and accept that this does not match with the 'wrong' EAN on the cover; (3) make it possible to contribute under the 'wrong' EAN that matches the cover (I have no idea whether this is technically possible?). Who's to decide? Simon. |

| Posted: | | | | Oops, small mistake in my numbers. The 'wrong' EAN 4 789056 7517789 is wrong, I typed one 7 too many; should be 4 789056 751789 and has to be removed because it still is wrong. Simon. |

Intervocative database was full of those. |

| Posted: | | | | Third option is against the Rules and SHOULD BE. Even though under the old IVS people would make up UPC#s, despite the Rules, to get their unannounced wishlist titles on board and then would never change them them, they would also use them to get their illegal boots into the Db.
