I live in a home that has a network. Last Monday at least two of the rooms couldn't get online and I noticed the icon in the taskbar said that I had little or no connectivity.
Today I tried an experiment.
I took my computer out of my room and hooked it directly into the router and now I can get online again.
So now I know it's not my computer. So what could be the problem?
The cable or the wall jack in my room or something else?

Make sure you haven't exceeded the distance limit between connections. Now would also be a good time to upgrade to Gigabit level if you are still running 10/100BaseT. Run new Cat 6 cable, and upgrade your NIC cards to Gig level. You'll be glad you did. | | | John

Thanks for any help. Reboot your router then reboot each PC. If you still have the problem after that, post back here but I suspect that your problem will be gone. As a rule of thumb, cabling is good for runs of up to 90 metres so unless you live in a Bill Gates sized mansion, you probably haven't exceeded any distance limitations. | | | | Last edited: by Telecine |

I again tried connecting directly to the router, this time with my own cable, t worked. I also tried the 2 cables that are already connected to the jack by the router and I can get online when I try switching those 2 cables.
So I have eliminated, my computer, the router, the cables. So I am sure it must be one of the two jacks, either the one the router connects into, or the one in my room.
I noticed that the jack near the router is loose, so I think it could be that one. |

Also, RJ45 connectors can sometimes be a bit flaky if they are not tight. Gently sprain the clip by bending it outwards, almost at a right angle to the connector. Then push it back into the socket. It should be difficult to do so now and when it does engage you'll hear a really satisfying "ping"! | | | Jon

| | Posted: | | | | WiFi is good unless you plan on pushing a lot of data over your network such as watching video. Wired LAN is still best for that. Gigabit LAN is even better.
I installed a Gigabit LAN and a WiFi at my house. It is recommended that you don't exceed 100' though keeping it under 50' for Gigabit LANs is recommended by some.
Things to keep in mind with WiFi's is that walls and the like will cut down on your signal range. |
