I am going to get it as soon as money allows. Maybe in November I am hoping. I read that the DVD set is not that good.

Anyone own it yet?

Ooh, 2 Dexter avatars back to back.

What did you read that is not good about the set? The content or the presentation? I love the show. I can't say whether others would feel the same. But the presentation is fine: 16x9, DD 5.1, 12 episodes (maybe the shortness of the season is the issue?). There's one featurette on disc and one online; 2 episodes of the "Brotherhood" series on disc and one episode of "The Tudors" online; plus 2 commentaries; book chapter downloads.

i read a review yesterday that complained about many of the extras being DVD-rom/web based without any box documentation [!!! !!!] from Showtime. I wasn't thrilled that they dragged the show over 4 discs to include 2 episodes from another series in the set--i only wanted dexter.

the show, video and audio are excellent.

I read they added 2 shows of brotherhood on the Dexter set which is not right because if I wanted Brotherhood I will buy  Brotherhood.

This is from a person on Amazon:

I mean come on, we all know this is hands down one of the best shows ever, the character dexter morgan, debra, rita, doakes, laguerta, all of them are great characters, well written, with depth, etc, etc, etc; we all know that, that being said..., the dvd's are CRAP!, for lack of a better word, the menus look like a playstation 1 game, they're horrible!!!!!, deppressing, saddening, boring; and the episodes themselves!!!!!, come on!!!!!, the don't even start with the always familiar "previously on dexter...", no!, they start with a very dissapointing "...viously on dexter...", what the f#@$!!!!, i thought it was my dvd player, it wasn't my friends!!!!, not even burnt the right way!, again, come on!!!!, and the features?, there's only one of the three they offer!!!!, and two episodes of brotherhood, who the f#*% cares about those?!, come on!!!!!!!!!!!, so after waiting and waiting for this show to come out on dvd, i'm giving it 3 stars because the show itself is amazing, but that's it!, if you like the show, fine, buy it, but don't expect to be blown away, you won't

I have it and those reviews, especially the one quoted above from Amazon, are idiotic.  I mean, I guess some people buy DVDs for the awesome menus some of them have...

I bought them to watch the show since I don't have Showtime.  It's got all 12 episodes, widescreen, 5.1 sound.  Isn't that really all you need?  As for the menus, when I press a direction it moves the cursor and selects the next item in that direction.  I can highlight what I want and press Select and it works.  That's all I really want out of a DVD menu.  You know what pisses me off is when they put those menus on some releases and you have to watch 15 seconds of some animation before you can even start selecting anything.  If anything I give this release a thumbs up for not having flashy menus.  I mean, it's one thing to give a DVD release a bad review for things they did and did badly.  But it's another to give it a bad review because it didn't have something you wanted.  What kind of logic is that?  The whole "previously on Dexter..." thing I have no idea what he's talking about.  Every episode does start off with that but if they're different than how Showtime did I wouldn't know since I didn't see it there, but it is there before every episode.  I even thought that was kind of odd they included that for a DVD release since typically that stuff is removed (like in the Sopranos).  And who cares if they threw in 2 episodes of some other show?  Umm.. don't watch them if you don't want to.  It's not like they cut out 2 episodes of Dexter and replaced them with 2 episodes of Brotherhood instead or they force you to watch them before you it lets you watch the last episode of Dexter.

And lastly, most important of all, I got this for $25 when it was released (either Target or Best Buy, I forget).  If this had been an HBO release it would have been more like $60-80 I would imagine.  So I applaud Showtime for the quality of the release and the price point they released it at.

And speaking of the show, I knew just based on the basic plot that I was probably going to like the show (which is why I bought it).  My wife wanted nothing to do with it, but I convinced her to watch the first episode.  She cringed a few times, but she's completely hooked now and loves the show.

I understood that his DVDs did correctly show the opening, but the word "previously" as cut off, therefore he was only hearing "...viously", the "pre-" getting lost by bad authoring... I don't have the set (I certainly placed in my Wish List, reading so much praise), soI can't chack myself.

Besides, I would never ever finish reading such a "review". I always read the reviews at DVD Talk, just kinda like their style, but I guess it#s best to read a whole bunch of them when uncertain about a DVD purchase.

Okay, I went back and watched the beginnings of a few episodes.  It does seem that a few of the episodes start a little too fast and the spoken word "Previously" is sometimes cut off so all you here is "..viously..".  Of the first 6 episodes (that's all I've watched so far) it happened twice.. atleast that I noticed.

In all honesty, who cares?  Seriously, do you really care care about the first 2 seconds that start off with "Previously on Dexter..." enough to say "this DVD sucks, don't buy it, pure trash".  I didn't even notice until I went back and paid special attention because I was skipping that along with the opening credits to get right to the episode.  It's said so fast it's hard to tell one way or the other.  I had to rewind and play it back a few times to really even be sure.  I guess people will complain about anything, no matter how minor.

-edit-
Just to clarify, not aimed at you Ya Shin, aimed at the original Amazon review.  Just quoting you since you explained what the guy meant which I understand now.

I saw the set the other day and almost picked it up.  The only reason I haven't is because I've already watched the whole season twice in the past year, it's too soon to watch it again.  May make a marathon out of it once season two is complete.

I just got done yesterday watching all 12 shows on Showtime On Demand. I get HBO, Cinemax, Showtime and the movie channel on demand with the pay channels for $20.

East and West cost channels. What is so kewl was My contract ran out for HBO and Cinemax which was like $2 a month for all 16 channels and on demand. At the time I was into The Sopranos and six feet under and was like wtf.

Then they told me I could have it all for $20 which was their normal price.

I found that disappointing as well.
Also, the 4th disc (and only the 4th) has Sony ARccOS structure protection (bad sectors). I usually refuse to buy such garbage, but no DVD reviewer thought of mentioning it.

I mostly agree. I found the show highly entertaining and sufficiently twisted. It lacks a bit of depth and avoids becoming truly disturbing, despite having a serial killer as hero. As for the lead performances, I expected Michael Hall to be great and hoped that Julie Benz would be - but nothing prepared me for the stunning performance of Jennifer Carpenter as Dexter's sister.

No, that is a serious over-reaction (possibly just because the author feels it is symptomatic of sloppy authoring when he believes the show deserves better) but some people really do care about small, accuracy details. I know many people on one of the forums I visit that (for example) really care that on 'classic' UK TV DVDs all the idents for the advert breaks are left in place etc. whereas most members of the public would probably want them removed.
Each to their own and their choice about what's important but, again, I will say I agree that (especially in a Review) that sort of over reaction is unhelpful.
