For books, I looked at using Library Thing, but I found it seemed to be geared around Amazon.com, and therefore suited new books.  Since I have a number of older (pre-ISBN) books, including a few from the late 1800s, I decided to go with SpaceJock Software's BookDB.  It's fairly simple, even if there are a few bugs/nuisances.  I don't catalogue my CDs/records anymore...
