A couple of years ago there was some development on a DVD that would "self erase" over a short period of time. I was wondering if anybody knows that if they have advanced this.

As far as I know it died a (well deserved) death.

I believe the idea was that it would obviate the need to return rental DVDs and thus save on costs that way but given
1) the efficient rental setups that are now in palce running qite nicely
2) the additinal cost of development and the requirement that the production costs be reduced to make it worthwhile and (probably most important)
3) the advances already seen and on the way in digital streaming/download services which get rid of the need for the production phase anyway
I think the chances of it progressing are very slight unless a new need for such technology becomes apparent.

I'm pretty sure the idea died off. Wasn't it mainly Disney who tried to get this going?

Yeah they are called Flexplay discs and they are not completely dead. On a recent trip to San Francisco I stopped at a truckstop to get gas and they had these discs for sale. There were pretty recent releases too.

I haven't seen the discs locally, but Flexplay is still in operation.

Though not quite related, ez-D kinda harkens back slightly to the old DVD/DiVX war.
Found this image when cleaning up some graphics folders the other week:
