Is there any harm in storing discs horizontally?  Should they always be stored vertically?  I've heard, but never had it explained why, that long term (years) horizontal storage is harmful.

I'm storing my discs horizontally and vertically. I never experienced any problems with my dvd's. I remember this alleged problem only from storing video-tapes.

Storing disc Horizontally or vertically will not damage them as long as they are not stacked on top of each other.  VHS tapes, however, would become damaged if stored horizonally due to the slack of the tape.
