| | Posted: | | | | FWIW this has been out in the UK (as "The Director's Son's Cut") for over a year and many people have viewed it quite favourably as it removes all of the stuff that doesn't work for many in the (overlong?) theatrical cut. FWIW here is the pre-release blurb for the UK release from back in 2006:
Arrow Films will release a radically re-edited edition of the 1989 adventure film Erik The Viking on October the 9th. Director Terry Jones explains: "When The film came out in 1989 I was not happy at all with it. With the Monty Python movies I'd been a hands-on editor, yet with Erik The Viking I didn't get involved with the process until too late. I've always felt there was a better film in there, waiting to get out, and this new version is it!"
Billed as Erik The Viking - The Director's Son's Cut, the two disc set will feature the theatrical version of the film, and a new version of the film, with new 5.1 audio and "enhanced picture transfer". The new transfer is in 1.85:1 ratio, with anamorphic enhancement. The 5.1 audio is offered at 384kbps.
There have always been two versions of Erik The Viking in circulation. The English cut was about ten minutes shorter than the US edition, because Jones continued to whittle away at it after the American theatrical prints had been struck. The original English version (the version on disc two) is 129'26". The new DVD version runs for a lean 75'15".

| | Posted: | | | | Yeah, I did my homework and spent a few extra bucks for the UK release after the US was announced. After seeing the US in store yesterday and confirming it only had the new cut, I'm beyond happy that I got this one instead. Plus the cover is much cooler looking on the UK set.  Haven't watched the "Son's Cut", but the English version still cracked me up. I'm still kinda interested in seeing the longer US version that I grew up with on video again. I don't recall it feeling "too long" at all but haven't seen that cut in about 15 years. There should at least be the 10 minutes of deleted scenes somewhere on the UK disc, but isn't. That's the only bummer about it IMO. |
