What DVD scratch repair system would you say is the best?  And, should I purchase manual or motorized?

I have a few very rare DVDs with scratches.  Aaaaargh!

How about this?  From Skip Dr.

or this?  From Simotech/ZDAG

or this?  From Alera (as if I have the $500 + to drop on this!)

Hi Floorwalker,

Do these discs play? Quality of the video & scratches are not related. Either the disc will play or it won't. I would only attempt repair if the disc refuses to play. Perhaps you should copy the discs & just use the copies, providing you stay legal & do NOT violate DRM laws.

Just like Rico said, only repair if the DVD stops playing or hangs. If it does I prefer car polish (ultra fine or nano-tech) and apply it manually. This up to now always worked for me, and I got some really damaged stuff from my video rental store.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

Nope. It definately won't play.  I was hoping to repair it enough to get one more play out of it on the computer so I could make a copy.

An interesting idea.  I might give it a try on some of the worse discs...

NOTE:  The discs in question are OTA recordings from TCM.  Some of which are likely to never to be re-broadcast...and therefore rare.  At least to me.

I've successfully used a rip function in AnyDVD http://www.slysoft.com/en/anydvd.html before. It claims to repair damaged DVDs and to be fair, on the three occasions I've had cause to try it, it has worked.

That said, I recommended it before and apparently it didn't help, but I suppose it depends on how serious  the scratches are.

Toothpaste might also work, Fllor, it is less abrasive than car polish, the big issue going to be how deep the scatch goes.

I agree with the above, repairm only if it will not play. I use the Dr. Cleean, Vintech, VC-2000 to clean and repair, CDs and DVDs. It does both depending on the solution and drys the discs.

A local CD store here in town that has one of those $500 machines. I know the owner, so I just take the "really scratched" discs over there sometimes, and they come out looking almost like new.

Some of those cheap "disc repair" systems (that slough the plastic layer) can actually make scratched discs look much worse though, so watch out.

I've used the one from Skip Dr. (think mine was disc dr. but its the same thing). I had the manual one and ended up getting an electric one because I was happy with the results, it saved a $50 playstation 2 game that had a scratch on it and would freeze up while playing.
