I've been asked for DVD shopping tips a couple of times by friends and was asked to post something on LiveJournal so that their sister could read it. It's not much use to many of you, but for the effort involved in copying and pasting it here I figured it may prove useful to some. Besides, one of you may teach ME some tricks...

UK Buying
Always start with Find-DVD.co.uk. It's very exacting, which makes finding something via either a very specific or very common name tricky (doesn't cater for minor name variations from site to site and doesn't order or prioritize results), but covers more sources than anywhere else I've found and is generally a 9/10.

There's no company that does consistent best prices, so I find this site invaluable. Most companies are very comparable, but two companies that tend to produce real standout deals are HMV (having much lower prices than the stores) and Woolworths (yes, Woolworths!). If I'm buying a whole series of something at once, it's very rare that I don't end up buying different DVDs from several different sources.

Another thing worth mentioning is the Amazon marketplace. Remember that you always have some shipping which often makes the saving disproportionate to the risk, but you can get some real deals.

Also, check for vouchers from somewhere like this.

US Buying (from Europe)
Similar starting point, but different destination. Always worth checking DVD Pricesearch, but the results are nearly always the same:
DVD Pacific cheapest with
DeepDicount very close behind. Sometimes you get a bit of a mix of cheapest, but once I factor in the shipping, I nearly always end up getting most from DVD Pacific with a few others from DeepDiscount.

One of the best things about this site is that it includes shipping prices in the comparison and allows you to compare multiple items at once (showing you the best overall purchase place). Very good site.
This is a sig... ... ... yay...

Don't understand? Maybe DVDProfilerWiki.org does!

Another useful feature of Find-DVD.co.uk is their DVD Price Watch facility. This allows you to enter a 'target' price for any title (the number of titles you set this up for is not limited) and then the site will email you if any store beats your target.
Very useful for those short term offers that you may miss if you have a big Wish List.

Another nice feature of Find-DVD.co.uk is their In the Shops facility... not particularly well named (IMO) this is a specially created interface designed for small screens, such as those found on mobile phones, which allows you to access their database whilst out and about so if you see what looks like a bargain when browsing in a shop you can check whether it really is as good as it looks or whether there's an online store which has it cheaper if you wait until you get home.

Another site for UK buyers that's useful for checking prices of DVDs from abroad and the UK is DVD Price Check which allows you to narrow your search by region and includes (as best they can) shipping costs from abroad in their calculations.
It is dangerous to be right in matters where established men are wrong

I actually find DeepDiscount to generally be the cheapest, their free shipping helps.

DVDPriceSearch has a mobile version of the site too. They call it wireless dvd price search (think that's less well named than In The Shops.

Quote:
The URL for our wireless site is:
HDML Version: http://www.dvdpricesearch.com/index.hdml
WML Version: http://www.dvdpricesearch.com/index.wml

you can find the link in the left of the latest update header.

However, while I do have a mobile device I don't have an internet plan so I would end up paying ridiculous  amounts of money to check the prices while in the store so what I do is enter the top 2 or 3 prices from dvd price search into the notes field of items in my wishlist so i have something to compare against while shopping in stores.

*edit, mentioned the wrong site with the mobile
