| | Posted: | | | | I live in Norway so we don't have those "use a scissor and cut out and send in" function on our DVD's. I just wonder about two things. How does this Proof of purchase work? Is it send in and get another movie? And second. Who in their right mind uses a scissor to cut in the cover of a DVD?  I have always wondered about this, and I can't sleep until I know what this means, hehe  | | | "What's God?"

| | Posted: | | | | I think that it's when a label (usually a major : MGM, Paramount, Fox,...) have an offer like this : Buy 2 title and get one free. Usually there are an insert in the case. I have never take the offer : I'm not crazy enough to volountary damage my dvd. But to be honest I think that the sales receipt work too. I don't think that my answer is complete, but I'm sure that someone else will add what I've forget. |

| | Posted: | | | | Sometimes there is an offer buy any 2 (or more) of these 10 movies and get $5 back by mail. 20th Century Fox did one a year or two back. I think I ended up buying 5 of the 10 over a few months and got $15 back by mail or something like that. They usually require the register receipt for each purchase AND the "proof of purchase" tag for the title as well. If you mess one small thing up they screw you. I'm usually picky enough to follow their directions to the letter and I've gotten my check a few months later. I am reluctant to deface my DVDs as well but when I did it the tabs were usually on the insert. Hope this helps you sleep |

| | Posted: | | | | One of the good thinks that can be said of a snapper case -- maybe the ONLY good thing to be said of it -- is the pre-perforated tear-off "Proof of Purchase" tabs. These are on the inside of the case -- and I usually tear them off just because they sometimes get in the way when I close the case. The outer cover (in my mind, the one that counts) isn't affected by taking these POP tabs off. It's not like the POP seal is part of the slip cover (like the UPC block).
I sometimes have the same problem with digipak cases and tear-off POP tabs. They make it hard to close the case correctly. | | | Another Ken (not Ken Cole)

I am reluctant to deface my DVDs as well but when I did it the tabs were usually on the insert. At least they didn't require that you send the original UPC like they do when you get a rebate for most electronic equipment. I do recall having to send the UPC from a DVD to get a special "unrated" version of a DVD once. If I recall it correctly, that was the only way you could get that version of the DVD. It wasn't sold anywhere else, just from the studio -- and to prove you owned the "rated" version they required the original UPC. In retrospect, I'm not sure the "unrated" version was so much better that it was worth defacing the cover. | | | Another Ken (not Ken Cole)

| | Posted: | | | | I've seen proof of purchase in all shapes and forms. The Snappers were good for having tabs inside you could cut out that served as proof of purchase. They were in the center of the inside, and you wouldn't even notice them missing if you cut them out. I've even seen where there were like four or more tabs lined up. There would also be inserts with a corner typed up as proof of purchase, and you would have to cut the corner. Of course, sometimes they are asking you to cut the UPC out as proof.
One retailer, FYE, uses a upc barcode, with the title of the movie, as part of their label with the price. They allow you to send this in for their rebates, along with the receipt and rebate form. The price sticker is on the outer plastic shrinkwrap, so there is no damage to the dvd in any way. I wish other retailers would do the same.
The offers also range from cash back, to buy x number of dvds (which are from a list of specific movies), and get x (usually 1, sometimes 2) movie free. It is also usually from the same list of movies that you have to pick out the free movie(s). | | | | Last edited: by mr. b_dvd |

| | Posted: | | | | For some reason I never minded taking the tabs out of snapper cases, but I hate to cut even the insert on my other discs. Usually because the POP will cut part of the chapter list on the other side. For a while I got around this by "borrowing" inserts from Blockbuster (remember when they had normal cases and discs on the shelves?) and cutting those. I can't recall the last offer I've seen asking for them now, seems to be a dead practice. I understand them not wanting scans/copies, but use an extra insert/coupon that needs to be sent in, not cut the existing one. |
