Just to share one more way to use DVD Profiler's powerful Tags.
I use them to (try to!) take note of the main English accents heard in a movie (as far as I can tell).
I'm still working at it, now it's something like this. Any suggestion or objection would be most welcome.

Even attempting that would drive me nuts!  Best of luck to you.  Oh, and if you want a DVD that will cover many UK accents/dialects, try Charley Says.

You might want to consider adding a couple of Canadian sub-dialects:

Newfoundlandish (if you're Canadian or know a Newfie, you know what I'm talking about)
French (from Quebec) (their speech pace and tempo and cultural words differ from traditional French spoken in Europe

Just to make trouble, what does a USA Black sound like?

Perhaps there are other sub-definitions in that category but I think accents don't necessarily go with race.

Except the Newfies.... and they like it that way!!!!

Depends.

It seems to me that sometimes the accent is distinctive (especially in the past, I gather). Sometimes it isn't.

But think of The Jeffersons or Sanford & Son, for instance. How would you describe their accents?

Yes, there are.

Races don't even exist, strictly speaking. I mean, we are just one human race.
But African Americans as a group of people who share a common history and sometimes social background, especially in the past, do sometimes (not always) also share a distinctive accent.
At least that's what my ears hear, but I could be dead wrong. Like I said, criticism is welcome!

I heard a report a few months back that suggested that there were three distinct "Australian" accents, but that one is dying out (the one old radio broadcasts were done in... a variation of the upper-crust English).  There's a distinguishable difference between east-coasters and people here in Adelaide, but I think in the report they were referring to a generic urban accent (essentially the generic US TV accent), and a rural drawl.  For the east coasters, we pick on the for saying the "bas" in basketball as you would the fish "bass", whereas in Adelaide we say it as "bar-sket".  Then there are regional dialects/linguistic difference.

Hmm, tracking accents ... the problem though would be what you think and what someone else believes would be completely different.

Especially when you are looking at other countries .. for instance I might be able to pick one or two different accents for the UK, but if you live there .. you'll be able to pick up each county, or even which side of the street they're from!

ps W0mbat: I'm also in Adelaide

Cheers

EnryWiki, can we get either a series of screenshots or a complete, expanded list of those accent tags?  Perhaps a few examples too?  I'm still in awe of the sheer madness of the attempt.

TommyG - An excellent point (and on the PS... Cool )
