Hi,
Does anyone know if US Windows XP pro has countrie restrictions?

I'm thinking of getting the full pro version while their still selling it (its going off the market here in 1 month), it costs 50% less in US then it does here, so was wondering if anyone knew if its fully operational everywhere?

I once bought a game from UK, if i want it to work i have to change my country, clock and all settings to UK otherwise it doesnt work. (almoust did a complaint to EU about the company since it isnt legal AFAIK, but couldnt be bothered)

Some XP Pro could be banned for export due to higher encryption
Microsoft Export Matrix

What can you tell me about restrictions on encryption in countries other than the U.S.?

Microsoft products with encryption are marketed and distributed in every country in the world, except those restricted under U.S. law. A number of countries have laws on the books that could potentially affect the import or use of encryption, though many of these laws are interpreted so that they are not enforced against mass market software products. Some countries regulate the import or export of strong encryption software by either a system of waivers, Open General (comprehensive) or individual (specific) licenses. All exporters must observe the specific licensing processes and policies of those countries.

Microsoft is unable to provide legal advice to its customers. When in doubt, customers should consult their own legal counsel.

but you could find some answers already here:

What does that mean? I'm thinking of ordering that ->
http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Windows-Professional-FULL-VERSION/dp/B00022PTI4/
...to a US address (someone i know), from where it will be shipped to me.

I also need it to be able to handle my keyboard (it has Ä and Ö, and probably some other stuff, like a , instead of . to separate decimal numbers)

The price is 270$ if add about 30$ to it as shipping costs, its 193€, here it costs 386€.

I have no idea why software is so expansive here e.g. Photoshop CS3 here 1000€, in US 400€

So if this works with the Windows i'm going to later do the same with AutoCad or BricsCad...

The US forbids software with high encryption routines from being exported out of the country.

As far as I'm aware the only differences between the 'Country' version's is down to the packaging and what is printed on the disc (text-wise).

You would normally be requested to enter your Locality / Keyboard preferences during the 'Set-up' procedure.

But don't quote me on that (just what I have come across myself with Office Pro 2003 edition).

Why, what? So the US windows has better encryption routines and those are not allowed to be exported from US? Does that mean that if you e.g. sell your old windows OS to someone in Finland you are breaking US law? ...or does that only apply to retailers? ...and how does the average joey know what software uses high encyption routines?

EDIT: that link Giga Wizard posted says:

Quote:
Mass Market:  The U.S. government regulations allow mass market encryption products containing strong encryption to be exported under 5D992, NLR (see above) after a 30-day review.  A "Mass Market" in this column indicates that the software has been reviewed by the U.S. Government and has been approved as mass market software.

Does this mean the XP pro is OK to be shipped, as i will not ask for the person i know to break any laws

Neat - this is the first I heard that there's an exception process.  Some companies such as Oracle make you state that you're currently in the US before you can download the software.

I think you could need:
MICROSOFT WIN XP PRO ENGLISH INTERNATIONAL CD W/SP2-E85-02667
Microsoft windows xp professional english/multilanguage E85-04111 (maybe this is upgrade?)

I became aware of this downloading earlier windows version software with lower encryption as the US version would not download.

also take in account that there are 2 versions: 32 bit and 64 bit.

Even on a US windows XP you can add a Finnish Keyboard layout and you can set the regional settings to Finnish. This can be done in control panel.

I don't think the encryption is an issue for export anymore.

I wouldn't advise on purchasing a 64-bit version. If you run mostly 32-bit applications, which most home users do, the 64 bit will be slower than the 32-bit version.

Chris

For less complications check here. I think € 36,90 + shipping isn't too expensive.
The XP-Pro offered here is the international english version usable for all languages and regions. Tried this trader too and it is trustworthy.
I hope that helped.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

WOW, thanks for the info. With trustworthy do you mean he doesnt run away with your money or he doesnt sell pirated material?

EDIT: On the sellers site under that product it says: - englische HP Version
Does that mean its an OEM for HP computers?
