I know they say curiosity killed the cat, but my curiousity is aroused about why you're so interested in these reports of what the US government is doing.  How does it affect you in Belgium -- or anywhere outside the US anyway?

Is the US government the only one guilty of such behavior?

One distinct difference is that the governments of Iran, China, Russia and North Korea aren't known for having courts willing or able to overturn actions by other parts of the government.  You will notice in the article Giga cites that the reason the FBI withdrew the National Security Letters was because it saw the handwriting on the wall and knew it would ultimately lose in court.

Still, other than US-bashing, I fail to see the reason for reporting things like this that happen in the US as if the US were the only country misbehaving.  And there's no true comparison between actions of US and those of Iran, China, et. al.

Quote:
A National Security Letter (NSL) is a form of administrative subpoena used by the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation and reportedly by other U.S. Government Agencies including the Central Intelligence Agency and the Department of Defense. It is a demand letter issued to a particular entity or organization to turn over various record and data pertaining to individuals. They require no probable cause or judicial oversight. They also contain a gag order, preventing the recipient of the letter from disclosing that the letter was ever issued.

In the U.S. we don't concern ourselves with this sort of thing.  Unless of course we personally receive the letter.

After I posted before I realized that -- which is why I edited the post to read as above.

I also doubt that many of these NSLs will survive in court.
