I was just curious if anyone had estimated how much hard drive space would be needed if they were to put their collection on a media server.

I did mine, and my estimate came out to be 10.5 Terabytes

OMG! I have nearly 3000! That is one helluva lot of space required! I could not afford the drives at the moment, let alone somewhere to put them!

I estimate 30-50 TB, HTPCs are going to have to get a whole lot less expensive before they become practical in any way. For small collections, i suppose, they are fine, but get any kind of size and they become prohibitively expensive very fast.

I guess that would be about 1700 discs ... how close am I? (AVG disc = 6GB). On sale in the US, you can get 1 Terabyte for $200 or less these days (something like a MYBook USB - rip out the Sata drive and throw away the case!).

No idea but it's certainly a frightening number. 1022 dvd in my collection, but the boxset child are not count in this number (I only give a number to the parent) and I count only the parent for the tv seasons too.

Pretty close.  I actually did my calculation by exporting my list to xml file and loading it into a database. A couple of simple sql statments later, I got my total.

I did happend to take a look at the Mybooks, but I had my heart set on putting together a raid array with a MythTV linux distro.  That way I can justify my Geek points!!!

I have mine on a media server - well, a set of media servers.  The current total is 21.25TB.

Now I'm starting to buy Blu-Rays, so that total's going to go up faster than before...

Impressive total. It would be helpful to know how many discs that represents, to help others estimate. I have been using 6GB per disc, and thereby would estimate your collection to contain about 3500 discs? How close is that? Oops, check that. That's 6GB x DVD discs + (???) GB x (BD or HD) ...

What is a good average for the amount of space to store a BD or HD?

I thought you were sick, smee, but now I am convinced of it. The next knock on your door will be those nice young men that will escort you back to your quarters, Nurse Ratched did not tell me you had gotten out...AGAIN.

@mediadogg: If smee has his entire library up on servers, he has just over 1900 titles...or at least that is what he admits to. He may be understating the number some, if he is married. That or the dog moves out...or in as the case may be.

I get it, thanks. But the operative item here is discs, not titles - that's why I underlined it before. You obviously know why ...

Edit: Some interesting numbers: You can now buy 500GB SATA drives for $80 (TigerDirect.com). That means it would cost about $3200 for the drives alone to store 20TB. But the 1900 titles probably cost over $20,000, so ...

Now Sony sells its HES for $3500. It has a 500GB drive and 200 BD slots. So the $3200 seems like a bargain, even after allowing for the cost of the HTPC, software and enclosures for the drives (the Sony could store up to 200 x 50GB + 500GB = 10.5TB for $3500).
