I was advised here a while back that The Abyss, the James Cameron flick starring Harris & Mastroantonio, is now available in anamorphic widescreen. It was a relatively early DVD release and was non-anamorphic, but has gone through a number of editions.

However, I've seen elsewhere that at least one edition had a cover claim of being widescreen anamorphic but turned out to be non-anamorphic (letterboxed inside the little 4x3 grid of a widescreen display).

Can anyone advise from actually seeing the display whether there is an R1 anamorphic widescreen edition? If so, what's the UPC?

Not that I am aware of, Karl. It remains one the last remaining "major" films still in need of a technological upgrade.

As Eriik pointed out, There is NO anamorphic R1 release of The Abyss.  Fox has re-released this title many, many times and it (almost?) always says anamorphic, but it never is.  I think the trick is that the menus are anamorphic (and have been from the beginning).  But the movie is NOT.  So don't be fooled by the packaging.
