I'm in the US but would like to purchase selected Region 2 titles.  I have no problem dealing with that format, and sometimes the R2 version is uniquely desirable.

What are the best web sites / forums that discuss details associated with making this as painless and affordable as possible?

Being based in the UK, and mainly buying region 2 titles myself, I usually purchase through either Amazon.co.uk, Play.com or HMV.co.uk. These are pretty standard sites and house all the mainstream titles and amazon in particular will have some rarer titles through marketplace or zshops. I personally have an amazon profile for amazon us (amazon.com) the uk (amazon.co.uk) and amazon germany (amazon.de). Even though they are basically the same site, you'd be amazed at the differences in products on offer.

As for some more specialist sites, first as a point of easy reference check out ebay.co.uk, which houses a lot of sellers with shops from all over Europe as well as the US and Australia, who may specifically target the european market rather than their own country.
When it comes to specialist sites my favourites are the following 2 US sites, incidentally which sell A LOT of european DVD's, and because they are based in the states the postage won't be as high for you:
http://www.diabolikdvd.com/ and http://xploitedcinema.com/catalog/index.php.

As for European sites, Suzuma and Chainsaw Video are pretty good (I think chainsaw may also host it's shop on eBay): http://www.sazuma.com/ and http://www.chainsawvideo.nl/ also a good one that I like to use is a German site www.t-m-shop.de.

I tend to forget about forums, as they are pretty subjective. Instead if I am really struggling to see what version of a film to buy I use: http://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/ which compares all versions of a title over each region and gives you pros and cons of each with an overall winner/s.

As you may of noticed,my website choices are a little biased towards the types of films that I like!

Anyway, I hope this helps!

Being in the states...I purchase imports from all over the place, but these are the ones I mainly use:

Xploited Cinema
Diabolik DVD
HK Flix
Amazon UK
Amazon DE
Blah DVD
Send It

You sometimes just have to look around to find the better deals, but I've had good luck with all of those retailers listed above. I used to use CD-WOW some too, but they went downhill on my last two orders and I really can't recommend them now.

If you're into Horror, we usually talk often about R2 releases (and everywhere else) on the forums of HorrorDVDs.com
and Cult Movie Forums (formerly the Anchor Bay UK forum).

If you need to know how to get region-free:

You can easily find players that can be modified to play other region discs and convert PAL signals. This is a good site for various details about many DVD players out there: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers.

Making your PC's DVD drive region free is often as simple as running a program like AnyDVD

This is really great feedback, so thanks to all that have written.  One of the problems I've had with UK sellers, even those listed w/Amazon, is dometimes figuring out which sellers will deal with US customers.  And I think I may need to create a separate account for placing orders on .UK

When it comes to market place sellers on Amazon, it should mention 'international delivery available' in the blurb under the seller name when viewing the 'buy it used and new' table. If not, many can be contacted via e-mail by clicking on their name. This is the same way that I buy from marketplace on .com or .de. Many sellers are set up over all three, so it would depend on currency exchange where to buy from. I find that the pound is so strong against the dollar, it is sometimes more beneficial for me to buy from the states, even with shipping costs. As for Europe, the Euro seems to be increasing in strength at present, but I usually check a currency conversion website before I purchase anything in a foreign currency, just so I know exactly how much I'm paying for something - XE.com is a pretty good one.
Yes you will need to create a separate account on Amazon, but it is just a case of signing up again. As long as you have a valid credit or debit card that can be used in the UK, it should be easy. (e.g. Visa, Mastercard etc.)

As a UK buyer I have had no problems using Amazon.com and Amazon.jp to order DVds, so you should find amazon.co.uk ok - just sign in with exactly the same ID as you used for amazon.com.

The only dofference with paying is that you will be using trusty Sterling..

And if you need to compare the DVd versions go to www.dvdcompare.net

I often check for info on www.dvdtimes.co.uk.

They often give full details on releases, both R1 and R2.

I've done the same thing but reversed many times, although as the dollar gets weeker I haven't ordered many R2 discs. When I was I'd check sendit and bensonsworld, but could usually get a better price from an amazon.uk seller who shipped to the US. I also use xe to find out how much I'll be paying (which is now skewed due to my credit cards all adding a "conversion charge" )
Don't know if I'm just lucky, but all orders from amazon.uk sellers have been perfect, can't say the same for amazon.us sellers. Half the time with them I get the wrong movie or wrong version, thankfully amazon has made them refund me. One was an honest mistake, the rest were BS, but all were refunded except for return shipping.
