Our babysitter came by tonight with a broken laptop.  It's XP and boots up fine.  But as soon as she logs into her account or the guest account, it blue screens.  Same thing from Safe Mode.

If it matters, the blue screen error is PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

She said she was having problems with her account, so she logged into the guest account.  She had installed a DVD player and it wasn't working, so she deleted it.  Then everything was fine for a day, but the next day, she couldn't get in anymore.

I'm thinking perhaps it's a virus, but since I can't log into any accounts, I'm not sure how to install scanning software.  As a last resort, I could get my XP disc and re-install (with her key of course).

Any ideas?

Never had this one, but google says it could be a hardware defect, either the harddisc, the harddisc cable or the RAM.

But since it happens on logon, I'd presume that the DVD player software destroyed maybe a driver DLL.

Have you tried to log in as "Administrator" in safe mode?

are you familiar with live-cd's (Bart PE)
Plugins for Bart PE
Plugin included with PE Builder, but the user needs to download some files from the internet before using it:
  • McAfee commandline virus scanner by Network Associates
  • McAfee AVERT Stinger by Network Associates.

  • How-to repair Windows XP, How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade
Description of the Windows XP Recovery Console
Sources for one or more of the changes and/or additions were not submitted. Please include the sources for your changes in the contribution notes, especially for cast and crew additions.

If you try to repair the XP installation and the procedure works you should nonetheless think about installing a fresh copy of XP because in my experience Windows will still have minor problems with drivers or services which might affect performance. This will also remove unnecessary weight (old programs/drivers etc.) which Windows collects over the years...

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA indicates a driver problem or a severe hardware malfunction. For further specifications we'll need the error number and the adress.
All the needed data comes with the BSOD (bluescreen of death)

EDIT: A virus may be the reason but it's quite unlikely (wouldn't make sense for a modern virus to block the access to your account).
If you want to check for viruses never do so on a running, possibly infected system. Most viruses detect a scan attempt and go into hiding, or disable the installation routines of antivirus software. It's better to use Barts PE here you can integrate an antivirus software and make a virus scan from a clean system.

But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

PS: if it is a driver problem problem, you may try to go to the boot menu (press F8 at startup), from the now showing list choose "Last working configuration" (or similar).

If its an acer laptop, if i remember right you need to uninstall the modem drivers. I first got it first time with an "out of box" laptop (nothing installed from my part). Personally what i did, was fresh install, and didnt install any software that came with the laptop, except LAN, audio and video drivers. If i remember right. That way i also managed to free 100MB of memory for applications that i actually need and used the windows own battery indicator.

I got the bluescreen usually an hour after startup, but sometimes right when its booting, and sometimes didnt get it at all.

Try an 'override' XP installation fix,,  then back up all important files,, then reboot and do a fresh install..

I agree with Goblin it is very doubtful it is a virus.
Depending on how soon during boot it may be a driver but also doubtful
The most likely answer in my opinion is going to be ram that has become unseated or a hard drive which is dying.  If you are savvy to steps to check in repair.  If you are not computer savvy take to your local repair place of even the geek squad at Best Buy.

Thanks for the advice.  She brought me a printout of the blue-screen, but I left it at home.  I hope it's not hardware related, but it's sure sounding that way.  I know she worked her butt off last summer to save enough money to buy a used laptop.  It's going to suck if this isn't an easy fix.  I have giving bad news.

Good News: Laptop memory is cheap.  If you can find a laptop with compatible memory, it'll be an easy test to see if it is indeed memory related.

Note that some laptops have a memory chip that's not easily accessible.

All I know is it's an old IBM.  I don't have any old laptops lying around to pull memory from.  If that's the problem, she might be on her own.  Still, I'll at least check to make sure it's seated properly.  Or maybe we'll just fix it for her and tell her she owe's us on babysitting.

Be interested to hear what model IBM.  I still use an R40 (circa 2003) and upgrading the memory (one of two slots was empty) was a breeze thru a panel on the bottom.

If it is accessible and there is more than one memory card try swapping them.  If it is a seating issue that may fix it.  If it is the memory the behavior may change, which would tell you something also.
Bad movie?  You're soaking in it!
