My friends, countrymen, Americans, Europeans, Asians, Africans and Citizens of the World.  Allow me to take a moment of your time during these economically and politically charged times.  Let me start by saying in many but not all cases most people could care less for others opinions if they differ from the others belief system.  Lately, Profiler has become a political battlefield with everyone making their opinions clear and any many cases hurting each others feelings and throwing red arrows like so many missiles from an arsenal.  It appears that when something happen in the world many people on here suddenly become "EXPERTS."  I have been staying out of these arguments of late as I know I am not an "EXPERT," few if any of us have degrees in economics, political science, foreign affairs, or even law.  I believe it is time that we go back to what we all are experts on, movies.  My proposal is that we return to what we know and leave politics out of the forums, all it does is cause arguments, name calling and hurt feelings.

Thank You,
Lord of the Sith

Nice proposal and probably a great idea.

Just for the record, those I have been posting to have been respectful and civil to me as my posts have also been respectful and civil.

I agree with this. Although we have the General section for off topic discussion, I'm not really sure that the amount of political discussion is really that necessary. No matter which country politics will almost always spark heated debates from all sides. If people want as many political discussions as there have been here, I feel that they are better on sites dedicated to them.

I disagree, to me the tagline really says it all "Discuss anything and everything, within the bounds of the forum guidelines.". These topics are created, and more importantly kept in the first page, because people find them intresting. If someone throws a read arrow on a heated discussion, that user is breaking the forum rules and that red arrow will eventually be removed.

No it won't. Single red arrows are not reviewed and will not affect a user's reputation. Only when a user receives multiple red arrows for a single post does a "red flag" go up and the post reviewed for content.

In general I agree as well, Lord.

But as long as the political discussions are according to the forum rules, they should be permitted. Even though I do not participate very much in those discussions, I like to read it and try to understand different point of views.

But please allow me one comment:
You all should use the red zingers very economical. It may be very easy to hit that red button in the heat of the battle! But think twice, if a political statement just don't match your opinion, or is it realy a personal attack and offending!

I once gave a red arrow to contribution notes i think no one else saw (A user was obviously and deliberatedly lying). That red arrow was removed and i got an email (or a red text saying it in the reputation page, cant remember) saying i should read the rules, excersize caution or something along those lines.

For what it's worth, I think that for the most part people here have been very civil in their disagreements even on political topics where disagreements can become heated easily.

I think it's a shame that there is a mechanism that people can use to annoymously give the red zinger to those they don't agree with...

But I think it says a lot for the faith of someones convictions that they keep coming back to stand up for what they believe.

I don't have to agree with someone to admire the sincerity and dedication with which they argue their case.

And for the record... I enjoy being able to discuss issues with the folks here.

People don't get into a position to need DVDProfiler by being stupid.  It's a very specialized tool for those who have been at least moderately succesful.  We may not agree, but we're all here because we've got a common interest and have had exposure to viewpoints very foriegn to our own.  (It would be a sorry DVD collection that only contains that which reinforces us instead of challenging us)

Disagreements aside, the debate is always interesting.

Probably because the user you gave the red arrow to complained to Ken in a PM. In that case, Ken will review the post and if necessary, take the appropriate action.

FYI, we're liberal in our allowance of topics in the general discussion forum and are similarly liberal in our allowance of feedback.  Let the poster to a heated political discussion beware.
