I had an interesting time 20 feet up on a ladder with my brother in law this morning.  My sister called to get help with a redtail hawk who had gone after a squirrel and got his leg stuck.  The poor thing had spent the morning flailing and was unable to free himself.

After we got the truck back in the woods we propped up the tallest ladders we could find.  After some interesting gymnastics way too high up for my comfort, we were able to free him.  My brother-in-law did the freeing while I did my best to keep him from falling - he might have landed on my truck, after all!

Amazingly, the hawk didn't go after us - he seemed to know we were trying to help.  Once free, he flew to a nearby perch, so I guess all is well.

Here are a couple of shots we got while he was stuck:

*EDIT* And one more from the phone for perspective:

Beautiful bird.  Kudos on keeping it that way.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

Nice work!

Statistics show that a leading cause of death in industrial accidents is falling from ladders. I couldn't find any statistical evidence however that any Software Programmers featured in those figures. Don't start a new trend.

As far as I know, birds don't come with UPCs, and SOHO DNA-readers won't be available anytime soon...

But yeah, great job, Ken. That the bird didn't go for you may have been because it was exhausted from the struggle, but I guess that there are smart birds too...
