They say that dog is man’s best friend. Well, my best friend and constant companion, Tillie, died Tuesday. She was a Tibetan terrier, possibly a mix. They are not really a terrier, but so called because of their size.

Over twelve years ago, I had just lost my adopted Benji look alike the two months before. I had gone to the store to buy a few items and paid cash. I had a dollar left over, so I bought a lottery ticket. I hit three numbers, about $55 dollars, just about the cost to adopt a dog. I thought to myself it is time to get another dog. So off to the closest Arizona Humane Society I went. I was looking for a dog the same size and the only one they had on display that fit the bill was being saved for their Saturday TV show. I ask an attendant if they had any other dogs that size, took to another room and there was Tillie.

She was a rescued dog, from abuse; they were nursing back to health. She was little more than skin and bones and had almost no hair. I took her to their get aquiantant area, she had a lot of pep, was friendly with all the other dogs, children and people there. Her age or where she came from no one knew. I talked to the vet, she said she was probably around two years old and all she needed was nourishment and a good home and should recover just fine. I said I was retired and had plenty of time to take care of her. I had not started collecting DVDs then, ha. She gave me some antibiotics and a schedule, so home we went.

In her condition it was difficult to determine just what breed or mix she was. In a couple of weeks she started to fill out and her hair was coming back. Hair coming back, hell, it was an explosion of hair. I logged on the internet, the American Kennel Club site, and started looking around for any dogs that resembled her. There she was, a Tibetan terrier, she fit the profile to a tee.
I said best friend, no humans are always as glad to see you or as disappointed if they can’t go with you when you leave. She monitored my every movement and word. And as the AKC profile states: “devoted companion in all of his owner’s endeavors. “ She was the gentlest of dogs, never growled or snapped at any other dog or human.

I should have known her end was near, because I think she knew because for two nights in a row before she died, I was awaken in the middle of the night and there she was sitting there just looking at me. I would reach over and pet her and say what’s wrong Tillie and she would get up and go to her usual resting place at the foot of the bed. I’ll miss her dearly.

She was also a devoted DVD watcher.

Sorry to hear about your dog, its always so devastating to loose an animal as they really do become part of the family.


I had my dog (my avatar picture) put down two weeks ago, he would of been 17 on the 23 of next month.
