| Posted: | | | | Since the search didn´t work..no connection to server ... I open a new thread
I have over 100 DVDs from India . India has several main languages and all of these regions has their own film business
In the database I find only HINDI as language . From over 900 movies made in India not more then 200 are in Hindi. They are are in Tamil, Telugu, Bengal, etc
I have several DVDs in Tamil and Telugu but I had to choose Hindi as languages which is of course wrong as these are official different languages and not like different type of English or French.
So what to do? |

| Posted: | | | | I suggest using tags, while I understand the problem, I simpldon't see how it is beneficial to add EVERY conceivable to our list of languages and have to deal with managing a list in the high hundreds. Not being terribly familiar with India, are these real langugaes and just merely dialects, in other words a person who speaks Hindi cannot be understood by one speaking Bengalese.
I don't know but the inflation possibilities in Languages, COO, and Subtitles I see as needlessly complicating the program.<shrugs>

Skip Yes, these are separate languages, and in some cases the languages come from separate language families. Some of the major Indian languages such as Tamil and Telugu are part of the Dravidian language family, while Hindi and Bengali are members of the Indo-Aryan language family. All of these are different languages - consider this the same as members of the Romance language family (Spanish vs. Italian) or Germanic language family (German vs. Dutch) - while the members of the family share similarities, each is a distinct language (and then within the language each has distinct dialects). There are 22 official languages in India. | | | If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world. -- Thorin Oakenshield |

| Posted: | | | | India does indeed have several completely different languages that bear varying degrees of similarity. It's probably best thinking of them as you might think of European languages (some similar, some very different). Looking at Wikipedia, you can see that there are considerably more people speaking many of these languages than some in our list. Interestingly, I've heard many times that Bollywood is the single biggest source of films in the world, producing both more films and getting higher viewing figures per film than even Hollywood. The Indian film industry is probably one of the biggest black holes when it comes to DVD Profiler. Thing is, even if you changed the application to be more representative of the real world, it's rather unlikely to change it's demographics in terms of customer base and the information on DVDs it contains are likely to remain skewed. | Posted: | | | | @ HuSanNiang: For now all you can do is choose Other for Tamil, Telugu, Bengal, etc. - which doesn't tell you a whole lot except that they are languages currently not listed in DVDProfiler. As Skip suggested, you can use Tags for further differentiation.
For doing searches I'd recommend using Google with "site:invelos.com" preceding your search terms. Unfortunately the Search feature is not the strongpoint of these forums. |

Stuart the term Bollywood (for movies made around Mumbai) is as nonsense as Kollywood (tamil nandu) , Tollywood (Andrah Pradesh) . As mentioned abouve only 200 from 900 are made around Mumbai. I asked only to take at least the two other main languages, where a lot of movies are made, to add in the database and not all of them When I read discussion about Quebec French as own language , then of course I can ask for Austrian German too but not entering real different lanugages is a different story How about have subgroups: under French a drop down button for all french variation, then Indian languages there you have then Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengal , Malayam etc So if you open the normal language setting you dont see immidiately all languages. simple problem from me to show the it I have the Tamil movie GHAJINI in Tamil without subitles, this movie was synchronised in Telgugu with English subtitles (which I bought because of the engl. subs) and now this movie was remade in Hindi which will come out in 1-3 month with english subtitles. Except for the last I cannot enter it the other 2 proberly. I entered first 2 under Hindi but with remark Telugu, tamil. Choosing the languges OTHER is nonsense for me. @DariusKyrak who do you think entered over 80 indian DVDs in the Database @ dee1959jay Thanks but I don´t use this forum as discussion with some "odd" memembers is not my thing and my taste of movies are not mainstream so I stick with my normal Asian movie message boards. | | | Last edited: by HuSanNiang |

| Posted: | | | | Never suggested you would do anything else, HuSanNiang! I merely wanted to help you do effective searches over here. In any case: now I know whom to ask if I have any questions about Indian movies! As long as the subgroup feature you suggested is not accommodated by the programme, Tags are the workaround you can use for it. And I'm always happy to see users with non-mainstream preferences. I have over 35 Countries of Origin in my collection myself, and even profiled a few Indian movies for the UK location (nowhere near 80 though... ). Oh, there's still so much to discover in movieland, isn't there? | | | Last edited: by dee1959jay |

| Posted: | | | | I'll accept that using the term 'Bollywood' was laziness on my part, but I think that my point was sound.
I'm not too sure at you're getting at with the 80 films. 80 for a single locality is tiny and indicates a (disproportionately) small user base contributing for that locality. I'd like to see the number of contributions for Indian locality and Indian COO films increase (maybe it would mean I could get better info for the Indian films I have in my collection), but the reality is that contributors of Indian films are relatively small and that is unlikely to change. I'd like to be wrong, but I don't think that I am.

Stuart Possibly, if the additional languages were added, the contributions would go up since the program would be more likely to suit their needs. There is no reason to limit what the program can accommodate. |

There is no reason to limit what the program can accommodate. I don't know about others here, but when I was first looking for a way to catalogue my collection I chose DVDP over the other options because it better accomodated my collection (i.e. already included some of the oddball titles, covered a large portion of the R4s), so this is an excellent point. The better the support for movies/DVDs from outside the stars-and-stripes, the more the userbase will grow. Although I suspect this would require a major change to be implemented, I think it's an excellent suggestion. This could also be applied for Commentary tracks to indicate language (and then probably an open field for who is commentating). | | | Adelaide Movie Buffs (info on special screenings, contests, bargains, etc. relevant to Adelaideans... and contests/bargains for other Aussies too!) |

Stuart 80 was just a guess by me .. I have no idea how many I added but a large part from DVDs from Indian movies I own I had to add manually. I don´t collect all what comes along only some few movies I am interested in. 90% which comes out in India is crap . As it is with every movie industry. That goes with all the other movies I collect. Now I have over 750 The other thing is that most indian shops (local, ebay and even some online shops) sell pirated copies which are 3-4 USD compared to 10-20 USD for a new DVD. So you eighter stick to the pirated ones (which many BW fans and NRI do..here I use bW on purpose) or you learn who sells the orginals eg Induna.com, Indiaweekly.com, Nehaflix.com, bhavanidvd.com or some good ebayler such as IndianAsh, Boombox etc Still not the language problem solved, so I am waiting for my next shopping to arrive which are Dil Kabaddi , Welcome To Sajjanpur and in the cinema the upcoming Billu Barber and Luck by Chance and officially a non india movie called Slumdog Millionaire and the upcoming ones in the cinema: Billu Barber and especially Luck by Chance On today´s schedule is hilariously funny and good dancer Arshad Warsi in his first movie : Tere Mere Sapne (1996) | | | Last edited: by HuSanNiang |

| Posted: | | | | I am still not happy that the other regional languages are not in the data base.
At least tamil and telugu can be added. I have now over 200 movies with language OTHER ...dooooh lets do a guessing game what other could be then on my list
that´s why most of my friends are using other sources to store their collection. They dont want this hassle | | | Last edited: by HuSanNiang |
