Hello everyone,

I'm new here and I've been trying the free version of 'DVD Profiler'.
I really like it and I'm thinking about registering it since the price is quite acceptable.

However, will I also get like technical assistance and possible the chance to have some input?
I mean, like giving suggestions in the forums and having a good chance of them being executed.
Because I did see some problems, and some obvious improvements that could be made.

Not to be negative about this software, it already has a lot of functional and useful features.
Searching for something like this, I didn't even think this would exist.
Before I found this I made a similar DVD-list with 'Excel', only in a way that's too much work.

Unless there will be a "full/final" version of the program when buying it.
But I bet I'd just unlock it and it would be the same, besides using it fully with more DVDs than 50.
Not hopefully, cause there are sóme actual issues I'm not sure why they are there.
Or did I accidentally install some BETA-version... I don't know anymore.

So, please let me know how it is.

Greetings,
- MicHaeL

Here is a complete list of the differences between the restricted and unrestricted versions.
You are unable to contribute profiles as a free user, but there is nothing stopping you from taking part in the forums - in fact you are welcome to take part!

Welcome to the Asylum. New suggestions to better this outstanding product are always welcome but I'd check out the Feature Request Forum first and check to see if your suggestions have already been suggested.  .

Ah yeah.
I already found the comparison-list of features, it's basically just saying many things stop working after the 50th DVD.
But I doubt the things that don't work, or just not work correctly, have to do with that.
Besides, I didn't add over 50 yet since I can try it out better fully of course. :D

But for the features and also the technical stuff I'll search the forums a bit.
Or else I'll just mention things there if you'd like to know what I mean.

Also, the thing I'm basically asking here is, if there is also enough support.
And like, if things pointed out by a simple member like me would be fixed if significant enough.
Even though if they'd be small things, it matters in software you know.
That's what I actually wanted to make sure first before purchasing a license.

Thanks for your replies,
- MicHaeL

Hello,

Welcome to the forums and DVD Profiler....

as someone who has been using profiler for over 6 years I can tell you that Ken Cole, the owner of Invelos, and sole programmer, is 100% committed to making the best product possible. Many of the best features as well as most important fixes are a result of the user community here on the forums. You will also find the forums are quite robust, with i would estimate several hundred active users who participate in discussions ranging from basic ht stuff, to how we go about creating our user built database.

the only thing you may see that is in any way disappointing, is that because the program is developed by a single person, and has grown so vast... sometimes development is slow. please consider, in order to make a simple change to the program he now needs to change the main program, the windows mobile version, online database, and the plugin developers materials.

the current version of the program is 3.5.1 and it is very recent as it was released less than a month ago... in my experience on average the program get's an update of some kind a few times a year, sometimes less or more depending on the amount of stuff changed, the jump from 2.x to 3.x for example was... epic... and well worth the wait. Your registration payment includes all future updates of the software, and the program is very stable and like i said, updates very regularly.

hope this is more the type of info you were looking for...

Ah yes, that's good to hear.
I wouldn't mind some time for development, especially now seeing there is only 1 person working on it,
as long as things move forward.
It seems like there is someone behind this software that cares, and that's important to me.
Because it's like... I don't want to be paying for a "small" (don't take that negatively) tool,
which would be "halfazzed", which apparently is not, and isn't changed in a year even.
But it looks like it's all good then, good thing these forums are here too.

Maybe an idea is though, not that I doubt anyone's expertise on their own creations,
that there would be more fixes/changes in a row, rather than bunches with a lot of time in between.
Cause, seeing the version-number, I thought that would be the case.
Like, change a fix or 2 or a couple of tiny things, and add like 0.0.1 to the version-number and release it.
Just an example of course, but maybe for like features, it would be nicer for the users. :D

Thanks for the welcome,
- MicHaeL

Welcome to the DVDP user community, Michael!

I've been using this programme for around 6 years now, and I think it's gotta be the best 30 bucks investment I ever made. Very happy with it!

Usually, if there's a technical problem, Ken Cole (the owner/software developer) is quick to either fix it or to explain in these forums how to get around it. Small fixes are usually ironed out in the beta phase of a new release. Whenever a new release is scheduled, registered users can get the beta release. Problems are then being reported in these forums and Ken is very quick to release new build numbers in which they have been fixed. So in beta phase, what he does is not increase the release number, but rather the build number.

In general, the longer standing issues have to do either with expanding the feature list even further or with contributions, interpretations of the Contribution Rules and/or modifications to these rules. Sometimes fierce debates on such issues can be found in these forums.

BTW: if you want to search these forums, you're better off using Google with "site:invelos.com" preceding your search terms. The search feature of the forums themselves does not work very well.

DJ

P.S.
There are also some great plug-ins, written by some very kind and helpful fellow DVDP users. Sometimes you'll find these will do exactly what you've missed in the programme itself.

Welcome to the group....  Before DVDp I used MS Access and nearly pulled out my hair using it....  I have found the application to be quite stable and the support outstanding as it is provided by the community....

Welcome to the asylum Michael. Go ahead, take the plunge! You'll not find a better program for tracking your collection that I'm aware of. From reading your posts, it looks like you might be concerned about changes to the program either not coming soon enough or perhaps you're worried that you'll have to pay again. Well, don't worry. Once you purchase a key, it is good forever. Until the end of time. I downloaded the free version back in 2003, and within 2 hours of starting to use it, I payed for it.

The next major change coming our way is supposed to be an improvement in the online collection page, but at this time we don't know what to expect. I will say if the change to the online is anywhere as comprehensive as the change from Version 2.4 to 3.0 the we're in for quite a nice surprise. When 3.5 was in beta, one field was causing some concern for many users, and before it went live, it was expanded to allow 3 entries instead of 1, and another field was lengthened to allow ratings details to be longer than the first beta release. So Ken does listen.
