I have experienced it a couple of times that a contribution of mine got rejected because

"An invalid source, such as a third party database, was listed in the contribution notes. Use of a third party database is not allowed per the contribution rules."

Even though i understand this rule i don't understand it to get this message after i stated that every new contribution from my side is printed on the DVD-Cover (Front or Backside).

So here my question:

who rejects these contributions, and why is this person not willing to check the cover scan?

How on gods earth can the DVD itself (we are talking about the parts of it which you can hold in your hand and read, not the software part) be an invalid source?

Maybe someone can help me here, because i really don't understand it.

What is it what i do wrong when i describe the source this was (just as in "30 days of night"):

"Source: DVD,
everything is printed on the backside of the Cover.
If you can read you can see it on your own if you just take a single look at the coverscan."

What can i write different or better, and why didin't my actual (& true) lines help?

Because the cover although in print can still be wrong.

The ONLY place to get the credits is from the credit run at the beginning (old style movies 50's early 60') or from the end of the film when the list of who, what, where & when.

And don't just say that that is where you got them from because if somebody else does an audit on one of your submissions at a later date and the credits are found to be wrong, it will be noted by the screeners for future reference and you may well find your contributions again being declined.

So best to remember "The Only Source For The Credits IS The Credits"

If a DVD in the database has no infos about the cast (example), than why reject a contribution which took those missing infos straight from the DVD cover? Is it truly better to have no infos at all than those which are printed on the cover?

The printed infos can be checked by everyone, the credits only by those who own the DVD and have the motivation and time to watch not only the featured movie, but all of the credits as well.

I heavily doubt that those who are allowed to accept or reject contributions will EVER watch foreign dvds (example), and if they do, will truly understand each and every credit which is listed in a foreign language.

I won't argue about "The Only Source For The Credits IS The Credits", but i would like to argue about the practise to ignore all informations from the DVD cover because there MIGHT be an error which MIGHT be found later (months, years) in the credits.

And here a little last hint (even though this might shatter your world view, sorry for that)

Even the credits can be faulty. So, where does us lead this knowledge? That only infos given under oath should be accepted?

It doesn't matter if the film credits Maybe Faulty once they are in the film credits and released they are there for all time and wont change unless the film is withdrawn and subsequently re-edited.

A DVD cover can change ever couple of weeks if the distributor so desires. Try re-reading the Rules. They do specify that the cast and crew credits are to be taken from the DVD Film credits and nowhere else.

You will also note that for things like the overview from the rear cover Has to include (if present) any spelling mistakes.

As you say if we have a title in the DB that has no cast or crew assigned then the person who submitted either didn't own the title at the time (may have been Pre-Release information) or is just lazy and can't be bothered to use the end credits from the DVD.

It is not I who makes the rules but Invelos themselves and if they say cast and crew credits from the beginning / end credits then since it's Invelos's program and website then that's what we as Invelos users have to adhere too.

If you don't like their rules keep all your information local and don't contribute it, after all if things got nasty and went to litigation it won't be you in court but Invelos.

Steve, thanks for you answers, with helped a bit ( even though i honestly can't imagine invelos in court because of datas in the database which are printed on the dvd package, if at all only the distributor, who printed and released the dvd would need a lawyer while invelos would only need to update the datas).

But anyway, thanks.

Do you know a way to protect local datas against updates (like "locking" the datas)?

I know i can check the updates before downloading / overwriting, but with 1500+ dvds you get a bit lost about which datas you wanted to keep. and when you get an update with 50-100 dvds, you don't want to check every change (as long as you are not bored to death).

Locking of individual profiles is quite easy:
DVDProfiler menu: "DVD -> Locks" for a single DVD. Or, for more than one, flag the profiles you want to lock and use the menu "Collection -> Flagged -> Locks"
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

Certainly.

Top line in DVDP.
Collection (should be second item along the top)> Flags (7th item down)> Invert Flags (to flag all profiles) (can also use Shift+Ctrl+I)

Collection > Flagged (8th item down this time)> Edit Locks (3rd item) then just place a tick in the box/boxes you wish NOT to be touched during an update.

having locked the profiles or parts of the profiles you wish to lock.
Collection> Flags> Unflag All (Shift+Crtl+U)

Once the profiles are locked and you are previewing an update you can de-lock individual items to allow the update from within the update area. Preview window open along the bottom right hand edge 3 buttons "Edit Locks" + "OK" + "Cancel"

A good way to chech what updates are coming, is to vote on contributions, there you see which of your DVDs are up for an update

cheers
