There are already quite a few threads asking this question: here's the most recent one I could find.
On top the ones mentioned there, I use CATraxx for my music collection.

Here's a program I used to use for my CD collection (when I still had one, now I mostly buy MP3s) :
Music Collector
You can use a barcode scanner with the software (provided you have one of course). The downside is that you'll need to buy a new license for major upgrades.

I understand where you're coming from. I used to use Movie Collector for my DVD's but at every major update, I had to buy a new licence. This, coupled to some more advanced features DVD Profiler has, pushed to away from Movie Collector and towards DVD Profiler.
Still, they have a demo version limited to 50 CD's, so if you like you can give it a spin to have an idea of the possibilities as a reference to compare with other software.

I bought version 7 just before version 8 was released, so was allowed to upgrade for free. So far all the updates have been free, but I believe that once it goes from 8.x to 9.x I'll have to pay again if I want to stay current.

Their website says free lifetime upgrades (at the end of the "Features" page)

I can vouch for CATraxx. A (chargable) upgrade comes around every 18 - 24 months (i.e. not that often!), the minor updates are free. I recently asked a similar question in view of creating a DVDP for my CD's but it's just impossible. Perhaps Ken will have a change of heart one day! So I opted for the next best option.

It's a great piece of kit, and is the most customisable and easily the most wealthy in terms of data you can store.

In my opinion, and I've subscribed to OrangeCD and Collectorz, it wipes them out of the water in terms of functionality. And it does insurance reporting.

The forum guys are very helpful and answered all my questions too, even the head dev guy helped me setup some custom features which are cool.

Seriously, don't discount it cos you have to pay for major releases, they don't come around very often, and none of them are compulsory.

Good luck!
