Traffic on BluRay - 1080i ? |

| | Posted: | | | | 3rd post since registering a few months ago! Woot!  Not sure if this is the correct place to post this question, but here goes. I bought Traffic on BluRay about a week ago (UPC 065935-825470 Canada), and just sat down to watch it tonight. It's paused right now while I post this. My TV shows the signal as 1080i. That's "i", not "p". I have about 116 BluRay movies now, and this is the first time I've seen a BluRay show as interlaced instead of progressive. BluRay player is a PS3, updated to lastest 2.60 firmware. TV is a Sharp Aquos 52" LCD (LC52D82). The film is very grainy, but that's fine, all reviews I've read said it is because of the source film stock and the way it was shot. That's fine. But 1080i? Just for sh%ts and giggles, I popped it out and put in another movie (Nixon) just now and it's 1080p as it should be. Can anyone else with the Canadian UPC of "Traffic" confirm this for me? Alliance films, the Montreal Based Canadian distributor for this title has released several no-frills Blu-rays recently with no menus except audio, no scene access or features and often in 1080i. The good thing is that these are usually titles that are not available on blu ray in the US yet, the bad is that these releases are as bare-bones as can be. We get them in HD and the US doesn't, but they are not exactly top-notch. The other upside is they are usually pretty inexpensive and can be found for between $15 & $20 CAD. The 1080i looks very good on my TV, but it is only a 32" native 720P display.
Two other titles I can persoanlly confirm that have only 1080i are Derailed and Seven.
I imagine that when these titles are released in the US we may see a reissue in Canada since generally Alliance just ports over the US release and sticks their name on it. |

Seven is 1080i and also in the wrong aspect ratio (1.78 instead of 2.40), but it is open matte so you're not losing any picture. I thought it was rather interesting to see it in this configuration, although purists may frown at it... | | | | First registered: February 15, 2002 |

| | Posted: | | | | Just to say avoid Seven from alliance catalog as the framing is completely wrong. Good Will Hunting i own as it's a great upgrade from my old region 2 version and yes it's 1080p.
As well as From Dusk Till Dawn but you might want to hold out for the US Sin City although it will cost a lot more.
I went through a phase not that long ago where i sold off the majority of DVDs and become an uber Blu-ray fan boy. Needless to say i have come to the conclusion that despite DVD having worse PQ i rather just buy DVD's as well.
The catalog of movies on DVD being the main factor and waiting for Blu-ray to get cheaper.

Thanks for the confirmation. I'll be sure to watch for this in the future, I feel I got "ripped off". Yes, the disk was inexpensive, but I've come to expect 1080p on BluRays. Ugh.... just had a look at the back cover, it indeed does say 1080i. I will no longer assume that all BluRays are 1080p, and look on the back cover from this point forward. Thanks again, Poo |
