| | Posted: | | | | I picked up a couple of discounted Warner Bros. releases of classic films (Father of the Bride, and Treasure Island (1934)) with bilingual English/French covers--not in the online database. It seems clear they were released for Canada, but are they Quebec? How would I tell? (Does it matter much?) Thanks.  |

Since they are bi-lingual it will depend upon where you are, yes that means two Profiles; one for Canada and one for Canada (Quebec).

The easiest way to tell is by looking at the cover. Is English or French the most prominent language shown? Some specific examples: OverviewIn which language is the overview on the back written? If both English and French, which translation is listed first? Canada (Quebec) locality releases will have the overview in French, followed by the overview in English below. And vice versa for Canada locality releases. TitleIs the title in large lettering in English or French? Whichever language is not in large lettering usually has the title listed in brackets below the large version of the title. Quotes from CriticsCanada (Quebec) profiles will usually have French-language quotes, while Canada profiles have them in English. -- Now... many Canadian releases have reversible covers. With English being the most prominent language on one side and French the most prominent language on the other. In this case, just use the side with the language you're most comfortable with, and then submit the profile accordingly. Note: Even though the overview is often written in both languages, you only have to worry about submitting the overview in the language of the locality you're creating. | | Posted: | | | | Most bilingual releases are meant to be Canada-wide and most of them have English first all the time. Only a few studios actually release Quebec-specific versions, the most notable is Disney. The rule of thumb is, if you prefer the English submit it to Canada with the English Title/Overview, but if you prefer then French then use the Canada (Quebec) locality and put the English title (assuming it is an English movie) in the Original Title field. Unfortunately there are a lot of people who submit English-only profiles to Canada (Quebec) and it really irritates me no end.

(I bought them in downtown Manhattan, NYC, so that's no help.  ) Titles, overviews, tagline on one and review quote on the other are English first, then French. The covers aren't reversible. If I get them all ship shape, I'll submit them as Canada. @ Astrakan - I already did the bilingual Overviews, a nice little challenge since my schoolboy French is 25 years old. |
