Hi all
Hope you can clear this up a bit better for me as I am a bit confused on the rules it seems, I just contributed North by North west, originally just the covers but I noticed that the profile said it was a snapper case, I have a keep case and this dvd is part of a collection of six  keep case dvd's kept in a slip case, the other five films have the correct case in the profile which is a keep case but this film has the wrong case, so having contributed the profile everyone was quick to pickup the fact that the original film is a snapper case, so I'm confused as to why 5 of the 6 dvd's are correct and the 6th is wrong, surely when this collection was contributed it would have been correct, my arguement is the fact that it is  part of a collection of dvd's and some how one profile is not right, otherwise they are all wrong and should all be snappers, again it maybe a rerelease but when I added the EAN to my collection it got 5 of the 6 dvd's right and the slip case, so somewhere along the line this film has changed its profile because it would have been contributed as a box set. Your thoughts and opinions greatfully appreciated.

For one thing remember that DVDs are now about TWELVE years old. The ORIGINAL release of N by NW from WHV was indeed a Snapper. The title assuming it is the same UPC and just re-packaged should ONLY use the ORIGINAL relase data and Cover Art. YOU should maintain the Keep Case data and Cover Art locally as that is what you own. I don't know what the other titles are in the set you mentioned, but in all likelihood they are actually listed incorrectly in the Online, but perhaps not. That's just the way it is, storage space for every possible cover for every possible could quickly become unworkable.

It's always helpful when you speak in specifics instead of generalities, like the name of the Collection and the titles it contains, perhaps even UPC#s. Then we can research and give more specifics information, but as I said it is highly likely that the other Profiles have been incorrectly submitted or altered.

Its always simple, just follow the Rules.

I'm assuming you're talking about an Alfred Hitchcock boxset, correct? North by Northwest and five other Alfred Hitchcock films? (I'm thinking it was a Signature Collection).

If that's the case, then the profile for North by Northwest is actually correct.

That film was originally released in a snapper case.

And in fact, I even remember seeing that Alfred Hitchcock boxset and thinking how funny it looked because there were five films in keep cases, and then all by it's lonesome, in a snapper case, was North by Northwest... it even stuck out past the edge of the slip case it was contained in.

Even though the film has subsequently been re-released in a keep case with I'm assuming the same UPC/EAN code, the profile for that specific release will have the original information contained within it, hence the listing of a snapper case instead of a keep case.

I wasn't around when it was decided, but along the way somewhere, it was decided to keep the original information intact in the online profile to stop the ping-ponging (back and forth) of contributions to change it from one case type to another. Therefore the profile you download, will say Snapper Case even though yours may in fact be in a keep case.

Simply change the case type in your local database and lock it, preventing it from being changed back to a snapper case if anyone ever updates the profile again.

It works the same way for cover changes. In your collection, you may come across a dvd that has the same UPC/EAN code, but yours has a different cover. Meaning it was probably a re-release of the dvd with a different cover. The online profile will keep the first original cover (again, to stop the ping-ponging of contributions), and you're free to scan and upload the cover you have into your local and lock it to keep it from being changed back.

Hope that helps clear up some of the confusion!

It does appear to be The Signature collection. And I do know that Dial M for Murder was released in Keeper, 2004 if my memory serves was about the time that Warner Home Video finally decided to abandon the dreaded Snapper in favor of the Keep Case. Based on Merrik's comment you even purchased a re-release of the Signature Set, since as Merrik says the Original did contain the Snapper for N by NW.

Perhaps someday Ken will create a way to deal with this type of issue. It was decided to stay with the Original release data and Cover for two reasons. It was understood that all we could deal with was one version of a given UPC#, the Original Edition in essence is the FIRST Edition of a given title, why should a subsequent second printing, if you will take precedence over the FIRST Edition. Now it would be nice for Hollywood to release such titles with entirely new UPC #s but such are the vagaries of the film industry.

So as I mentioned you should maintain the Cover Image of the Keep Case and the Case Stuyle in your local but it is not, at this time, contributable.

Thanks thats all cleared up, it was the signature collection, even more interesting then if when originally on sale one of the pack was a snapper, still learning all the locking locally etc but nice to know why, even more surprising you think you have the original but its a re-release, just out of interest is there a way of purchasing the original dvd's or is that now a specialist shop charging twice the price

There is probably a way to buy the original release, but it would probably cost you. You'd have to track it down soemwhere.
