| | Posted: | | | | My understanding is that we should use what's actually on the DVD, as determined by the DVD menu and/or software. Take as example, the totally magnificant "Black Symphony" by Within Temptation, 0 16861 09239 9. Band are Dutch; the concert is shot in Holland, Sharon's vocals are mostly in English (with a bit of Latin thrown in for good measure!) , the band talk to the crowd in Dutch (with English subtitles). Disc is produced by GUN Records GmbH (Germany) DVD menus are in English Software reveals three English soundtracks and English subtitles. Therefore I suppose the audio tracks should be English. However, I would not be dismayed by a concensus of using "Music Only" for concerts. In fact I see that I've been guilty of using "Music Only" in a couple of my recent submissions...... I use Music Only for instance for the music that media companies will put on DVD to accompany silent movies. And the profiles of my UK version of Koyaanisqatsi abnd Powaqqatsi mention Music Only too - and I don't feel tempted to change it. In the case Mole mentions I would use English as well, but NOT because software says so, but because the vocals actually ARE (mostly) in English. I've encountered quite a few cases where the language label on a particular audio track on disc did NOT match the actual language. I treat cases like that much the same way we do cases where cover info is wrong: I'll always go for what is actually on disc, and not for how it's labeled. Recently I've also encountered cases where the DVD menu gave me a choice between three audio tracks and when I proceeded to play the film and check the available audio tracks with PowerDVD, there were actually four tracks on disc - for some strange reason the company that had produced the release had chosen not to include an MPEG-2 audio track in the DVD menu, even though it was on disc. In these cases I contributed four audio tracks, not three. Etc. etc. Bottom line IMO: go by what you can verify to actually be on disc, and forget about labels, menus, covers etc. |
