| | Posted: | | | | I know this is probably a dumb poll to put up but I am looking at purchasing a dvd catalog software and I have narrowed it down to 2 you guessed it DVD Profiler and Movie Collector. I used to use Movie collector back in the day and when my computer crashed i never set it back up. But i was looking over the new one and not sure if i wnat to go back. So I was hoping that you guys could give me some insight on the differences and why you chose this one over that one? I am downloading the trial now to test it out but from what i see it looks pretty nice and looking forward to trying it out. I am looking forward to hearing your comments. Thanks  |

| | Posted: | | | | I have been a long time Movie Collector user and I switched to DVD Profiler, simply because it has more features than Movie Collector that I find useful in a collection tool for movies, such as: - pictures for cast/crew members - better online contribution and updating system - better lay-out and visual style - automatic pick system - watched by system with multiple entries I think you could also add My Movies to the poll. That seems to be the up and coming movie collector tool and it is freeware so far. It lacks certain options that DVD Profiler has (e.g. you can only tick a box to indicate you have already seen a movie, but DVD Profiler allows you to input who saw it and at what date, each and every time you have watched the movie). However, My Movies has a big advantage over DVD Profiler, which is that it supports any character set. That means I can input titles and cast in Japanese characters whereas this is impossible with DVD Profiler. It still boggles my mind that in this day and age, a software program is incapable of handling unicode character sets  For now I keep using DVD Profiler because the online database is the biggest one among the three so far and it offers the most advanced collection options. However, if My Movies catches up in those fields, I think I would switch over for the Unicode support. Well, that is just my opinion of course ... | | | Blu-ray collection

| | Posted: | | | | Actually, I can't answer the poll, since I use both. If you are only going to use 1 application, DVDPro is definitely the way to go. It has a much better database, and that factor alone should make all the difference. DVDPro also has a lifetime license. But since you were using moviecollector before, maybe you are one of the lucky ones that has the old moviecollector lifetime license, and you are entitled to the latest version for free. I believe the purchase date has to before october 2006. I export my dvdpro database to XML, and import it into moviecollector (changed import settings to have the full cast, default only imports about 10 or 20 actors). Then I use moviecollector to export to a website. I used DaveC's Aqua II template which has search functionality. Yes, I fully agree DVD Profiler is a much better program. But I do like their export function. And since it can import from DVDPro, I can use the wonderful Invelos db in their program. | | | View my collection at http://www.chriskepolis.be/home/dvd.htm
