If there's one Blu Ray I want more than any other is The Good, The Bad and The Ulgy (and Fight Club!).

I noticed it's finally coming out in the US and I've pre-ordered it from PlayUSA.com

http://www.playusa.com/DVD/Region_1/3-/9236511/The_Good_The_Bad_And_The_Ugly/Product.html

What are the chances of it playing on my UK PS3?

Cheers, Spike

DVDBeaver had this to say about the French release:
Quote:
Region FREE    Blu-ray - April 09': Firstly, this is the French    Blu-ray edition and IS Region FREE (as verified by my Momitsu player) but many things lead me to believe it will be EXACTLY the same as the US MGM    Blu-ray disc coming out on May 15th, 2009 - except for the French language packaging. It's region-free and main menus are in English. This is probably the only edition that will be available and it is 'international' with plenty of subtitle and some DUB options. Finally, the disc takes up almost 48 Gig of the available, dual-layered, 50 and I can't see a US version extending beyond that. No, I'm fairly certain this will be the same transfer as on the US    Blu-ray. We will compare but I'm not expecting any surprises. So, let's take a look at this...

Yep, me too (and Gladiator & Braveheart). Hope for you that it does work on your PS3.

Should be no problem. As others have said, it is speculated that it will be Region free.

Many of the MGM Blu-rays released by 20th Century Fox (even the early ones) are Region A locked, so it will be surprising if this one is region free.

Then again, some of the MGM titles have been region free (the latest batches of catalog titles like Silence of the Lambs, Raging Bull and Pink Panther have all been region free). So I guess it can go both ways.

I ordered it from PlayUSA and it was dispatched a few days ago. The link posted says:

Please Note: We have tested the USA version, the Canadian version (which we do not stock) MAY NOT be region free and may also contain half English/half French text all over the cover!

I'm guessing that PlayUSA stocks Canadian versions, but if you look back at Patsa's post it looks as if this could also be region free. I've only ever purchased one Canadian DVD and as far as I'm aware it's exactly the same as the US version but with English and French text on the cover (i.e. a 50/50 split).

I don't plan on opening the packaging until it's confirmed region free as that way I'll still be able to get a refund and buy the US version instead from movietyme, etc.

Why is it that Uk is so long after with some titles in Europe?

This title has been enabled in Norway from 22/4 (the good the bad) and I guess erlier in other European countries.
This I have noticed for other titles as well, I preorder them from play.com and see them on shelf in local store long time before...
We are all at the same age, only at different time...

Mine has just arrived at it appears to be region free!

It's the Canadian version, stated as region A on the back, but works fine on my UK PS3.

The front cover seems exactly the same as the US version (already in the database - UPC 883904140917) except below Directed By: Sergio Leone it say in slightly larger text LE BON, LA BRUTE ET LA TRUAND - its barely noticable.

It's in a slim HD case, and the spine has the French and English title in equal sized font.

I would guess the back will also be exactly the same as the US version, except the overview will have been reduced in font size to make space for an equal sized French overview. At most the entire overview section takes up 1/4 of the back cover.

Looks like that date wasn't too far off...from The Digital Bits (with pre-order links):

Paramount Home Entertainment has just OFFICIALLY announced a trio of BD titles that we've been hinting at for months now in The Rumor Mill. Specifically, Braveheart and Gladiator arrive on Blu-ray on 9/1, followed by Forrest Gump on 11/3. All three will kick off a new premiere series for the studio, called the Sapphire Series. Each will be a 2-disc set, will be fully remastered and will include extensive, never-before-seen bonus material. Here's a breakdown...

Braveheart will feature 2 hours of new material, including a trio of new BD-Java Interactive Timelines (Production, Historical and Fiction), 2 documentaries (Braveheart: A Look Back and Smithfield: Medieval Killing Fields) and the Battlefields of the Scottish Rebellion option explained thusly by the studio:

Two major Scottish battlefields, Falkirk and Bannockburn, will be presented as 3D models that can be explored for further investigation into the military strategies and timetables employed in each. Topography, weapons, troop movements, and leadership data can also be accessed. An alternate playing mode will allow the story of each battle to unfold in an "automated" fashion, much like the interactive dioramas displayed at historical site museums around the world.

Meanwhile, Gladiator will be presented with both the theatrical and extended editions, and will include two separate audio commentaries (one on each edition), The Scrolls of Knowledge interactive viewing mode (with trivia, a deleted scene marker for the extended edition and branching featurettes), the Visions from Elysium: Topic Marker (that allows you to create playlists of various topics of interest while watching the film, so you can watch bonus material on those topics after the film), the Strength and Honor: Creating the World of Gladiator documentary with its own enhanced viewing mode (offering branching featurettes and trivia), 5 behind-the-scenes documentaries (The Making of Gladiator: HBO First Look, Gladiator Games: The Roman Blood Sport, Hans Zimmer: Scoring Gladiator, My Gladiator Journal and Image & Design), abandoned sequences and deleted scenes, and VFX Explorations of Germania and Rome.

Finally, details for Forrest Gump (which is being released on Blu-ray in honor of its 15th anniversary this year) will be released in the coming weeks, but we're told it will also include new material such as a newly-recorded roundtable discussion video. From the studio's press release, director Robert Zemeckis had this to say:

I'm delighted that Forrest Gump is going to be a part of Paramount's Sapphire Series so that fans can enjoy it at home with pristine picture and sound along with a wealth of special features to give the film context. It's wonderful that Paramount is taking the time to produce exceptional Blu-ray presentations of these classic films.
