Greetings! I have a problem and I think that this group may be just the group to pick up the challenge.  Here's my problem:

I own a fairly large collection of DVDs. After I surpassed a few hundred, I found that while I was really enjoying my wall o' DVDs, I was quickly running out of room. I started throwing away the plastic clamshells and started collecting them in books, with the cover art scanned then filed away. This worked for a while. Almost immediately I had to give up using DVD-specific storage books because they held too few and were expensive. So I shifted to regular CD books. I also tried several methods to keep them organized but as the collection grew, it just became too cumbersome. So, I used the location field in DVD Empire to keep track of the book and page number for each disc.

Once I got to about a thousand, I realized that I was outgrowing the book method. I found that the books carrying about 200 discs were about the maximum size otherwise the sheer weight of the DVDs made the books unmanageable. However, it seemed that I was spending an awful on the books and was having the same problem with them as I was with the DVDs originially: no room in which to keep them.

I came up with a new soultion. I bought paper sleeves and started keeping the DVDs in boxes. The paper was using too much room so I shifted to plastic sleeves. Then I bought a piece of furniture to put the boxes in and I was able to keep them all alphabetized provided I was faithful about putting them back properly. I had found a long term solution to my problem. I would be able to add to the collection for quite some time before I ran out of room in my cabinet.

That was about four years ago and we have a new issue: television shows. Instead of a title issued being a disc or two, not it was not uncommon to have four or more. Once you start collecting seasons, it all can get out of hand very quickly. With the TV shows and new format causing me to re-buyu certain titles first on HD DVD and now on Blu-Ray, I have greatly accelerated my problem so that now, with just under 2400 titles averaging out to well over 3000 individual discs, I am running out of room. WHen I buy a new DVD TV Season, sometimes I am spending thirty or more minutes to file them in the correct box, shifting all the DVDs "to the right" in order to make room in the appropriate box. Also, it just can't be good for the DVDs to be crammed in there so tight, as they are in some boxes.

SO...  ANY IDEAS?  I thought this might be a great thread to follow out, not only for me, but for the young 'uns just starting their collection. I have spent thousands of dollars on books, boxes, cabinets, sleeves as I go from one idea to the next.

If you go for a flight case like what Astrakan posted, I'd recommend you get a metal one.  There can be a fair bit of weight in them even when just half full and the faux-metal ones can fall apart after a couple of moves.

i'd start migrating ro a draw storage solution (with locks and heavy duty wheels), similar to what is used in a dvd/video rental scenario.. (if going with this method of storage i would strongly suggest buying a trailer to suit the load it will be hauling because once you start getting into the 10,000+ (not money but size) region of dvd's you start to look at a heavy weight to shift...)

where possible try and stick with fatpacks or thinpacks saves alot of space, when you start looking at tv series with 50+ disc's  in the series...

unless you're traveling alot, from 50-500 disc cases are a pain and can heavy to lift especially if you're constantly shifting every few years.. especially as your collection grows it takes more weight..

Don't know where you'd get them these days, but what we use for sleeves are ones that were designed for 8 inch floppy discs.  They're exactly the right size for the discs (we keep all the papers in the case for display).  We have boxes of them in the back room; I guess we got them wholesale at some point.
