| Posted: | | | | Quite a few profiles in the database use the title X Files. The vast majority use X-Files. (Locality : Any)
In the locality Netherlands 2 profiles use X Files (Season 1 and the first movie). The rest (75 to 80) use X-Files.
In searching for the "official" way, (Google : x-files official site) the following sites came out on top http://www.xfiles.com/ http://www.xfilesfanclub.com/ http://www.foxstore.com/listing.php?format_restriction=0&query=&search_keys=x+files&Image1.x=0&Image1.y=0&record_count=40/
All of these "official" sites use X-Files, not X Files. The graphics on these sites show the same thing as the Dutch titles: The "X-in-a-red-circle" Files.
Is it safe to say we use The X-Files? Or shall I (or someone else) change the 75/80 other profiles?
Opinions most welcome. |

| Posted: | | | | I don't see the need to change anything really, as long as most users are happy with what they've got... Most front covers use the X logo in the circle, which could be interpreted as The X Files. But if you look at the back, the overview and copyright will often use The X-Files in normal text. Being Profiler of course we take the title from the front cover... What is the on-screen title? If it's The X-Files, maybe this should be added to the original title field. | | | First registered: February 15, 2002 |

Pretty much what I was about to say. |

| Posted: | | | | Thanks for your your answers so far.
To give you an example of why not changing anything doesn't work for me:
I own the X-Files: Seizoen 1-9, EAN 8712626023333
This profile consists of all 9 seasons, 8 of which are now called X-Files. 1 is called X Files. All the seperate disc profiles , including those of season 1 are also called X-Files, not X Files.
It seems logical to me that this inconsistancy should go, (one way or the the other, preferably renaming the 1).
And of course I know I can change this locally, but the main database would then still be inconsistent. And I can't imagine I'm the only person with more than just the first season.
Cheers, Steve
Update: Just popped in the first DVD I came across. The menu and opening credits are also the x-in-a-circle. | | | Last edited: by Mallrat |

Is your suggestion that I change the other 8 seasons and all the the disc-profiles of the Dutch profile because the UK-profile doesn't use the "-"? Like I said before the vast majority uses the "-", not every profile and/or locality. If your point is that because there is no "-" on the front cover or the credits there shouldn't be one in the title then I think there is certainly something to say for that. And if thát is what is the decisive factor then thát should be enough reason to change the rest of the profiles in the box. It's a relatively simple change to make after all (even though it's about 70 changes). If they're needed, they're needed. A pointer to this thread in the contribution notes might be able to prevent discussions via the votes. (I am right in assuming that you don't think that the different seasons in the same locality should have different ways in using X Files / X-Files I hope?) Gee, I wish I started a poll now. |

| Posted: | | | | hahaha that is what I'm saying The Cover title and the Credits title are the main source. The - between the X and the F is nowhere crediited | | | Cor |

| Posted: | | | | Ok, So let's hope a few more people have an outspoken (and similar) view on the matter to illustrate to voter's that there's a consensus. (I don't mind which way it goes, as long as I don't have inconsistent titles in my collection.) Maybe after a few more people have said what they think I could do a trial contribution changing only the title of (for example) season 2. (After all, not all users frequent the forum regularly.) A bit too soon for that at the moment though, I think. Cheers (and goodnight, I'm off to bed now ), Steve |

| Posted: | | | | Don't believe you need to worry about a consensus as... if I remember correctly... the rules for TV Series tells us to take the titles from the front covers. | | | Pete |

The question here is how to interpret a fancy logo thing when making it into regular text. This doesn't factor in. For instance, it's conventions that when a title starts a new line and changes font, we represent this as a colon. Look at 2001: A Space Odyssey, Batman: The Movie, Firefly: The Complete Series, etc. This is a similar situation. The X is set apart from the rest of the text. Fox provides us with a guide how to make this into straight text, so no guessing is needed. |

| Posted: | | | | Just do what the Rules say: the Title field is filled in with what's on the front cover, ignoring any non-ASCII type characters. AIUI if the cover only uses a logo then we can usually agree (wow!) to take the title from somewhere else on the case.
If the Title in the credits is different that goes in the Original Title field.
In this case there is no '-' on the (UK) cover, and the circle around the X is certainly not enough to make it a 'new unprintable' character demanding we take the title from anywhere else, so the '-' shouldn't be in the title field so 'X Files' is correct. | | | It is dangerous to be right in matters where established men are wrong |

I agree. The rules are clear about this and the X is certainly readable. The X Files is written on the NL boxes the same way as on the UK boxes. | | | Cor |

I just recently changed the title for season 1 (NL) and it got approved with 100% YES votes. | | | Cor | | | Last edited: by Corne |

| Posted: | | | | Isn't there also a principle that when in doubt, we use the copyright notice? The notice, at least on the complete series set says "X-Files." |
