Good evening, Sirs,

after contributing a profile change to another locality, I received a private message
that began with "You are an unfriendly person."

Perhaps I'm too sensitive, but in my view XXX is rude and not the appropriate
language when discussing a contribution.

So I'd like to ask the moderators to monitor my incoming messages as well.

Love, bbbbb

I feel you should keep this out of the forums but report that user to Ken/Gerri right away.

I agree. I would be vehemently opposed to moderation of Private Messages, because as the word already indicates they're private.
There are several things you can do, bbbbb: report the user to Invelos, as sugarjoe suggested, but also to block that particular user. You might also keep an eye on your contribution notes and update them if that user votes no to counter his argument.

As what the others said, you also shouldn't circumvent automatic moderation by hyphenating unfriendly person.

That said, you should block said user immediately.

Even though I consider insults and offendings as childish and needless - moderating or censoring pm's is going too far!

Just my 2 cents!

I agree and requesting moderation is just as needless as childish as the offensive post was.

I have to agree with the others... PM equals personal, the moderators had no reason to read them unless one is clearly bring to their attention by the receiver. The forum is public, but the PM not (they aren't called that for no reasons).

I do think that there should be a way for users to report such offensive PM's to either Ken or Gerri.

To not be able to report such PM's allows someone who wishes to to send offensive PM's to to others at will with the only punishment being that someone who received such a PM can block them.
That doesn't seem like much of a punishment to me at all.

Such behavior wouldn't be allowed on the forum, so it shouldn't be allowed via PM's either.

And no, I'm not saying that all PM's should go through a moderator first to get approval, but there should be a way to report a PM that is abusive, offensive or uncalled for to someone so that some sort of punishment if warranted can be given as needed.

As far as I know, we don't have plans to moderate PMs at this time.  Illegal activity (such as physical threats) should be reported to a moderator or to the authorities.  For other cases such as this one, the best course of action is to block the sender.

If you suspect a sender is creating multiple accounts in order to bypass blocks, please report that to a moderator via a support ticket or the "Contact Us" link at the bottom of the site.

If this ever happened to me I'd probably copy and paste the message, send it to Ken and/or Gerri along with the offenders name, then block whoever sent it.

Moderating PM's is taking things wayyyyyyy to far, although I watch enough real-life crime-detective shows to know that even PM's aren't completely personal. Should we call in the fed techs to find out who sent this from where? Hell no. I'm just saying if it got to that point steps could be taken, esp. if both sides were to deny everything.

Thank you for your thoughts, Sirs.

It astounds me that Invelos does not impose any sanctions and a user may insult
another one severely using Invelos' intern communication system.

Is there a way to block all users together?

Respectively to disable the Private Message system?

If not:

please notice that I have suspended the privacy of letters for **** personal attacks ****
through Invelos' Private Messages system with immediate effect.

Just don't check them... Ignoring PM is a little bit like it would have been disable by you.
Or you can check every users profile and enter them in your PM filter if you have a lot of time to loose

Sometimes your post make me laugh (in a good way)

The problem with ignoring a PM is that you'll keep that yellow bar informing you that you have a PM.  Then there's click on the PM to flag it as being read but even though you "ignored" it, the sender may have the satisfaction of thinking you read it.

Personally, I would reply "Nuts!" and then ban 'em.

But note, if Ken/Gerri intends PM to be private, your stand of their privateness (oOo, new word!) is void.

Monitoring the forums for the good of the community is a balancing act between freedom and censorship.  Taking action against users for private messages would be stepping squarely into censorship.

The mod has it right - if the PM is illegal, or if the user is creating accounts to harass you, please let us know as these are actionable by us.  If not, just block them.  A few clicks and you'll never get another PM from their account again - even if they change their alias.
