Not profiler related but I have some old family home video from VHS/beta that I transferred to a dvd-r a couple years back recorded in an lp format or 204 min of running video burnt to the dvd. In this home video is a section I shot at a picnic back in 1987 and I ran across the guy and his family the other day and told him about this video I have that is probably only 6 minutes in length. He expressed big interest in acquiring this footage.. and I thought it would be fun to transfer that footage (six minutes) to format (.wmv) and then upload it to youtube for his family to see today., BUT these videos files encoded on the disc are VTS_01, have me knowing that I should convert them over to another format so I could in effect go into say Windows Movie maker and then be able to 'edit' or pull this footage out to save it to another form and then upload that..
BUT when I use my software of convertxtodvd it wants to convert the whole thing., and if I use AVS video converter 6 to transfer the vts files to .avi it works out to a staggering 9.7 GB and the program stalls out and says it is not a valid source.. ?
any ideas from my smart friends here at Invelos that can guide me to the right format or the right direction in editing out and capturing 6 minutes of video from a 200 min VTS folder??? so I can save just the 6 minutes only to either .wmv  or .avi ??

It's been my experience that you have to rip at least a full dvd title, I can't recall ever being able to pick a few minutes and just do those.
I use either Nero or DVDfab for ripping, mostly dvdfab since getting it. If you use the "Zune" setting on there you get nice small wmv's that are of great video quality, but the audio is very low.
For Nero, open up express, put disc in computer's drive, and select "import disc", then you can just take the title this is on. Then you can edit it down to the footage you want, and export as whatever you want (although only mpeg has worked well for me. If you have the right codecs you can do avi, when I tried that it was uncompressed and around 20G ).

If you don't have either of these programs then I'm not sure. I know their is plenty other software but haven't tried any of it.

usign my windows movie maker i can import digital video thru a firewire ( camcorder) then import those files to movie maker , then put it into a timeline and cut and edit sections around..
But my movie maker is only interested in seeing the digital signal from the firewire ..
I was hoping it could import an .avi file to to the import video/audio and then I could go from there.

I then have two bought and paid for convertx to dvd and AVS  video converter both around $45.00
( movie maker is free with XP windows).,  .. So I really don't want to buy a version of Nero..
I was thinkjing maybe I wasn't using what I had already to the desired need .. of converting vts_01 to an editible  .avi  or equivalent ..

OK I found what i needed and it works.. great little web site offers you for a free trial or you can buy..
the free trial only offers 15 minutes of video to be converted I only needed 6 , so it work fine.. just cued up the video and then hit convert and then stop after the footage of 6 minutes passed by ( at a higher rate of speed on the little monitor screen) I now a smaller sized .avi waiting for me to transfer to the windows movie maker and edit and use some title cards etc and then off to you tube it goes...
