The rules say:
Quote:
If the Box Set has a rating, use it in the profile. If it does not, use NR as the rating. Exception: If any disc in the set is rated Adult, list the set as Adult.

What does it mean for a box set to have a rating, though? My copy of the Three Colors trilogy clearly says the set is rated R. However, my copy of the original Star Wars Trilogy lists a separate PG for each movie. Is this the same as the set having a rating or is it different?

Here's my take: a look around my box sets shows that listing a single rating for the whole is generally not done. Other than cases like Blade Runner, which we have apparently decided to treat as a box set despite there only being one movie, there seem to be very few sets that list a rating for the set itself. My collection is almost entirely American releases, though and this wouldn't necessarily be in the case in countries where ratings are legally required. It seems to me that if Invelos intended this rules to mean we shoudl enter a rating if all movies in the set have the same rating, they would have just said that, so we shouldn't enter rating unless one is clearly given for the set as a whole, not just it's components.

You forgot one, Ace. My opinion is not covered, Boxsets don't have ratings, movies do. Simialrly Paramount Pictures does not make Boxsets, they make movies, Paramount HE makes Boxsets, so it is wrong to list PP for the boxset. The boxset should not get a rating, it's just a piece of cardboard, the movies that are part of the ste get the Rating. Whether they all have the sme rating or not is not really relevant in my book.

I think we are pretty close to the same page.

In the UK, there are ratings given to the box set as a whole. The rating is given based on all the movies AND the extra features, not just the movies

Really that's very interesting, reybr. Hmmmmm. I don't think the MPAA has any such standard, in fact i know they don't.

We definitely agree on what a box set it, though the idea that movies have rating is rather US-specific. I assume the rule was written this way to deal with countries like the UK and situations like Blade Runner.

I agree with Ace_of_Sevens and Skip for the US releases. In the UK ,and here in The Netherlands too, the Rating system applies for movies, TV series, special features, games etc. it's a complete package. So in that case the Rating does say something about the box set. I would only add the Rating in the parent profile when the box set has a Rating. I would never use the rating of a child profile for the parent profile.

Legend and Brazil (which, granted, is unrated) are similar situations that had been out a while.

No, not like the Blade Runner suitcase, that was a trip and <fingers crossed> unique in moviedom, kind of. I think the new Terminator Head set poses similar issues, there may be afew others but nothing comes to mind readily. If I recall cvorrectly Legend only contained to separate versions based on the Soundtrack, Blade Runner had Five?...oy, what a mess.

What is Ridley going to do for BD Alien...maybe i don't want to know.

In Australia the boxset is given a rating too.

As per what Corne said, over here it is a package deal, everything on the DVD has to be rated, the special features, the main feature, any games on the disc, tv shows have to be rated too, as do video games, although for video games we don't have an R18+ rating

The rating rules are basically that the boxset MUST show the rating of the highest rated movie in the set. So for instance with my 'Bruce Willis' box set, out of the 3 movies 'The 12 Monkeys, The Jackal and Mercury Rising' 2 of those are M15+ and one of them is MA15+, therefore the boxset is required to have MA15+ on it.

The reasons for this are so that people who buy the boxset can see ahead of time what the highest rated movie is, otherwise a parent might be buying something like a childrens boxset for their 10yr old kid only to find that 1 of those dvds is rated PG (Parental Guidance recommended) while the rest are G.

Same thing here in Finland. Does this really mean that there is life outside U.S.?

In addition to what I have explained in the CoO thread, box sets do have their own rating required by law in many locations (UK, Germany etc.). Of course this rating has to be entered for the box set profile. For locations without this concept (MPAA in the US), I would enter the "highest rating" of all the children according to the order given in the popup menu ("Adult" being the highest).

I don't think I would change my attituderelative to US releases since we don't actually rate Boxes, I find it fascinating that foreign film boards feel the necessity to do so, but I think I can understand the rationale, though i don't like nanny states. But Rho is right if we are going to include a rating for a Boxset that isn't rated, it would have to be the highest rating in the set.
