| | Posted: | | | | Perhaps so, but just one word of caution: if you don't have a recent AV receiver capable of handling the modern Hi-Def sound formats, you'd better find out whether or not this particular player will decode them (it doesn't say on the weblink Kathy provided) or at least convert them to the older 5.1 sound formats, or you'll end up either without Hi-Def sound or even without any sound at all for BD discs containing Hi-Def sound only.
Another consideration is which types of connections this player has (doesn't say so either) and whether that matches both your screen and your receiver. |

I have yet to find a single blu-ray in my 436 discs that has an audio problem. IIRC all the HD audio codecs have flags built in so older receivers can translate the data properly. | | | | Chris |

Through optical you can't bitstream Hi-Def audio, unless it's downmixed or converted by the player first AFAIK. A standard TOSLINK optical cable is not capable of transmitting a TrueHD signal. Setting the BD/DVD Audio Output (Optical Digital) mode to Bitstream will give you a regular (non-HD) Dolby Digital or DTS stream instead. More on the topic can be found here. Check out what it says under Toslink for the various sound formats. EDIT: So what I'm saying is, is: what you're hearing from your receiver is good old DD and DTS, but not Hi-Def audio. Sorry to disappoint you.  @Agrare: Judging by the specs on the link you gave, the Memorex will decode everything except DTS-HD MA, which it can only bitstream to a receiver able to decode it. Meaning: if you connect an older receiver, you'll probably get "old" DTS, but not Hi-Def (depending on the connections the Memorex has - it doesn't say). | | | | Last edited: by dee1959jay |

On DVDSpot you said the same... but for 2010. I said that most company's would ditch standalone DVD players by then as the price of Blu-ray players would be cheap enough to justify it. As Blu-ray players have DVD playback. |
