| | Posted: | | | | Despite everyone who has no idea how technology works saying Blu-ray won't be by the end of 2012 the dominant format it continues to gather apace against it's rival DVD.
The latest this week is 24% of the copys sold of Up in the US where Blu-ray. That's almost 1 in 4 (duh).
What's so big about that is that Blu-ray traditional on family orientated releases has not fared so well.
Leading nay sayers to say that when certain titles do sell well it's down to the PS3 demographic or something ludicrous.
The fact is Blu-ray players have hit family friendly price and the doors are now open to the mainstream and the sales of Up are reflection of this.

After that, sales decrease to about 10% of the first week, while dvd decreases less. Let's see what percentage bluray sales of 'Up' are after 3 or 6 months of release. | | Posted: | | | | Judging bt my local Wal-Mart, Blu-ray is already dead. At leastt hey got G.I. Joe on BD last week, but all those catalog titles like Fight Club and such, not a single copy. My girl says Wally does stock different stores by what's selling in the area, so maybe that explains it. The one here is in a very poor part of town, but they use to have 2-3 racks of BD's, now it's under one and half (5-6 $10 titles and 10-20 newer releases). They nearly have more BD players than movie opitons. If you count the stacks of players in boxes vs the ammount of discs, there are more players.  |

As you mention, and the article leaves out, both of the titles that claimed the top two slots were Blu-ray/DVD combo packs. The true test would be a non-combo release that compares the Blu-ray sales to the DVD sales. I agree entirely. Plus there was the widely available $10 off coupon for the Blu-ray only. But Blu-ray still hasn't reached the big masses that buys 10-20 movies a year. I just read a report about the Norwegian DVD market, and it says that 49% of Norwegian households has an HDTV set, and only 15% of these have a Blu-ray player (including PS3). 90% of households are aware of Blu-ray, but only 5% are interested in buying a player. 94% of the households has a DVD player, and 87% has bought a DVD the last year. What I thought was particularly interesting, was that 18% of households bought more than 20 titles a year, and this represented about 56% of the total DVD/BD volume. 34% of these households has a BD-player or PS3. |

Average retail prices for new releases are between 25 and 30 € (38 - 45 $). Yesterday I spotted the latest Harry Potter for 36.99€ (55$). That's a sure way to kill sales.
If we purchase in the UK, new releases are usually 23€ (34$) and below, and prices for new releases drop faster. After a while a lot of titles become available for 13€ (20$). So, I tend to buy most of my BD's in the UK. | | | View my collection at http://www.chriskepolis.be/home/dvd.htm

So, I tend to buy most of my BD's in the UK. Couldn't agree more! I have about 300 Blu-ray discs now and have yet to buy a single one in Belgium (where I live)! Prices are astronomically high. All my discs are imported and even with higher shipping rates and in some cases import VAT, it still comes out a lot cheaper than buying the same in Belgium. Most of my imports come from the US, followed by UK and finally a few from Japan (those that are only available there or have a better encode there). Why such things always have to be so expensive over here really boggles my mind. | | | Blu-ray collection
