| | Posted: | | | | I buy things from both compnies. They are both third party distrbuters. One is under priced and one is over priced. I love both of them. I have recently bought a lot of criterions because of the sale on deepdiscount. I am up to 48 Criterions. I bought all four 250 movie boxsets from Mills Creek, a documentary on gansters in film, and the 600 cartoon collection. Lets face there are things that Mills Creek puts out that could be in the Criterion Collection like Noferatu and Metroplis, and there are things that Janus film puts out that could be distributed by Mills Creek like The Blob (I have it on order and have nothing against it). Criterion supposdly puts out the greastest movies, while Mills Creek supposdly puts out low budget movies. This is the general rule. What are your opions on the differances and similarites betwwen Mills Creek and Janus Film? I think they are both importan to film collectors. What do you think of each company? All opinions are welcome. |

I watched the The Ringer last night on Film4. There was nothing wrong with that film. |

Criterion often has to license films which are extremely well-known and extremely expensive. They perform labor intensive restorations and create/license extensive bonus features. When you buy Criterion, you know the reputation stands for quality. With Mills Creek, it is a crapshoot on what you might get. Quote:

Mill Creek just slaps old TV or VHS transfers onto disc, often in pan & scan versions and never in anamorphic widescreen, with zero restoration, as cheaply as possibly. If you just want to see it and are willing to risk the picture being cropped, pink, badly damaged and/or censored, then by all means.
But the overlap is practically nil. You aren't going to see many Criterion titles being put out by Mill Creek anyway. | | | | "This movie has warped my fragile little mind." |

| | Posted: | | | | I have a few Criterion... would get more if they weren't so expensive. I have several Mills Creek sets. While not the greatest releases... they are pretty good considering the budget prices. I have had some that the video quality was lacking... some with a hissing in the sound. But also some that looked and sounds fine. Of course I am on low end equipment so that may make a difference. I think the worse thing about Mills Creek here lately is the packaging. I mentioned it in another thread. Looks like a keepcase... but no hubs. Clips that hold in paper envelopes. I really hate those cases! | | | | Pete |

I'm happy with all my Criterions. The 4 I paid for averaged $12; the fifth was a gift. PQ & SQ are solid. I just ordered The Golden Age of Television (which looks amazing) for $27.47 from Deep Discount. |

At the same time, you could find films from every major company that were also non-anamorphic. Hell, Fox has yet to release The Abyss or True Lies in anamorphic DVD, let alone some of the obscure films that Criterion released in that way. And Criterion fixed several of those early titles with new special editions, with more in the works. |

| | Posted: | | | | On a side note I just ordered everything in the Criterion Collection that I did not have on Blu Ray. I figure if I start now with Blu Ray I will be able to keep up with it. I also ordered the DVD' of Henry The 8th, Naked Lunch, Vampyro and Berlin Alexp(spelling) (the worlds longest theatrical relse at 15 and a half hours)). It cost me $65.00 for The Thrid Man blu ray, and I already had the criterion DVD. |
