When I tried to pleasantly confront him on the "Wizards" = Cobalt 60 (which was 10 pages in Witzend) parallels, he admitted to Bode's work being an "influence" but little more. I didn't press the matter. "The Hobbit" was made by Rankin/Bass, who, while being more limited in budget, seemed far less limited in imagination. | | | If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

| | Posted: | | | | Yes, it really is horrible. I thought the animation looked like crap due to bad use of rotoscoping. Rotoscoping can be good. See A Scanner Darkly for an example of that. Also, the screenplay makes no sense. |

| | Posted: | | | | I really want to like it, but the bad rotoscoping really kills it for me. I have a personal fondness for it anyway due to the circumstances under which I saw it in 1979.  I do love Wizards, though. I didn't think the Bode influence was any mystery, though---seemed obvious from the second I saw the character designs. The Rankin/Bass Hobbit though is much, much, much worse IMHO. Ghastly songs---who thought making Tolkien into a musical was a good idea? | | | | "This movie has warped my fragile little mind." |

I didn't object to the bad rotoscoping as much as the butt-ugly character designs.
The Hobbit & The Return of the King - both Rankin/Bass productions - are much better, with The Hobbit being the better of the two. | | | If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.

But to try and pcak three novels (big ones at that) into one show just isn't going to work in any form. The Hobbit was credible, but his LOTR just didn't get it. 1/2* MAYBE
