I'm auditing a title.  The credits read

From the Novel "Father Sky" By Devery Freeman
Adaptation by James Lineberger.

The current credits have both of these listed as OMB.  I think this is incorrect.

I agree that Freeman should be OMB.

Lineberger should be?  He did not write the original material.  He adapted the original material for the film.

For information sake.  The next screen shows

Screenplay by Darryl Ponicsan and Robert Mark Kamen.

Comments please.

As I understand it, the screenplay is based on the adaptation of the novel, not the novel itself.  As such, both get OMB.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.

In my opinion "adaptation by" needs its own entry in the writing section. It's not quite OMB but not screenplay either, but I think it's still important enough to track.
From my reading of the rules unfortunately we can't track it at the moment, but I'd very much like to.

I would have no objection to adding it to the writing crew section

However, at the moment I do not believe we track Adaptation at all, and it does not fit any of the current categories.

I would, but only because I think we have too many crew credits as it is.  Other than that...

I'm tracking these locally as custom roles because there's too much back and forth on the subject.  I'd be fine with adding it on a conceptual level, but practically speaking, I'm getting sick of making pass after pass through my entire collection every time another thing gets added.  Given that, please no more data expansions.

Adaptation can also refer to the screenplay (absent a separate credit for screenplay, of course). Here's a TV credit I just profiled:

Quote:
Paul Newman starred in Arnold Schulman's adaptation of the Mark Harris novel for television.

Clearly, Arnold Schulman wrote the teleplay based on the novel.  (Granted, this is an unusual crediting situation.)
