Today in the big box of DVDs I got...

Campfire Stories

This turns out to be an Ex-Rental from Hollywood Video. But apparently the person behind the counter was too much in a hurry when they sold the DVD.... and forgot to take the lock off the DVD in the case. I am sure my friend that sent me this just didn't (as she bought a bunch of ex-rentals recently) notice it.

Anyway I am now stuck... not able to get the DVD out of the case. Is there any way I can actually get this disc out of the case without damaging the disc? I really want to see this movie... so I am a little desperate here!

Just to clarify... it isn't the case is locked closed. This type there is a round lock on the hub so you can't remove the disc from the hub.

Can you take a picture of it and post it?  Then we'll know what we're dealing with.

I thought of that... was about to do it when I learned I need new batteries in my digital camera. And of course I am out of batteries.

Can't take a picture right now... but here is a (sloppy) mock-up of what the lock looks like.

On the hub... over top the disc is something that looks like...

The center circle is a grey piece sticking up just a little higher then the lock base. The 4 other circles are just indentation in the plastic base. the 4 rectangles are slits in the lock looks like some type of 4 prong key to go into?

I know it isn't nearly as good as a picture... but hopefully that helps.

This thread made me check all the obvious ex-rentals. And wouldn't you know it... found another one that was still locked!

El Chupacabra

And yes... of course it is another horror movie.

If it is horror, maybe your firend is torturing you and will send you the unlock-key for your birthday

First thought:  do you have a steady hand and a pair of wire cutters?

If so, you could take the artwork out of the case and cut down the back of the case to free the dvd from the back.  You can always get replacement cases.

If not, let me think some more.

I had the same thought... but it didn't help. I tore the case to pieces... only to find there is a disc made into the back case as well... broke the plastic around the disc... but now there is a thin plastic disc on the back and thick plastic disc on the front of the disc... no way to remove it. Also this locking case it is in... seems this spool the disc locks in is a metal covered in plastic.

So not having much luck on this.

Sounds like a magnetic hub lock which can only be removed with a magnetic key. Trying to pry off the lock will damage the disc. You could probably fashion your own key using a strong rare-earth magnet.

Ask her to the send receipts if she can find them. Go to local rental store and tell them you got some DVD's sent from a friend who bought them at a rental store but they had no removed the seals.

Use your receipts as evidence. Job done.

2 part problem there...

I would have to find out to be sure... but I believe the person that gave them to me also bought used in a bulk ebay sale type thing.

Also... I live in a small rural area... the last video rental anywhere near here went out of business long ago. Netflix/Redbox put them all out of business.

Then the only other suggestion i can think of is to connect a lock smith and ask if he can remove a magnetic lock. He should not ask any question and if he does say you got them off Ebay.
