I think you mean custom packaging? At least the Limited Editions I buy are mostly "Special Editions" that have a limited press, and the next release will often have the movie without the extra disc or just less extras.

I literally throw the packaging away and keep the discs in DJ boxes, so no, I wouldn't spend extra money for how it looks.  I might, however, spend extra money for additional video content.

Every time you put or take a disc out of one of those plastic sleeves,  it's getting scratched. On the plus side it does save a lot of space. But what do i need space for? A coffee table? 

Unless of course your sleeves are lined, which mine are.  Only an idiot would place 3000 discs in pure plastic sleeves and expect them to last.

Basically, they're large cases with lids, like a trunk.  Each case holds 900 discs in hanging sleeves.  Each sleeve is numbered.  I use the Profiler location/slot fields to keep track of which case and which sleeve.  The sleeves are lined on one side, so no double-sided discs.  You can put them in, of course, but then you do run the risk of scratching on one side.  The fact that the sleeves are suspended, rather than stacked also reduces the potential for scratching since you don't have the accumulated weight on the bottom discs that you can get with binders.

The picture wouldn't be very exciting as you'd just see 4 cases lined up against a wall.

Mine had a few of those Fast Five Steelbooks but I went with the standard one because the Steelbook case is DVD size and since I own the other 4 Fast movies, I wanted the latest to match (now, if the Steelbook had been the size of a Blu-ray case, then I would've picked it up).

I used to buy a lot of limited editions (because they’re quite cool and fun to own), normally on the day of release, but then I wised up and realised how much I was paying for these.  Now I don’t buy any discs unless they’re priced (including delivery) at no more than £9 for a DVD, £11 for a Blu-ray and £15/£20 for a TV series/season.  This means I have to wait a while (typically 2-9 months for films and a bit longer for TV stuff), but I can afford to buy probably about a third more films instead for the same amount of money, which is what I want more than nice packaging (that annoyingly doesn’t always fit onto the shelves anyway).  I also compare prices across four retailers for each release too, just to make sure I get the best price I can; it's amazing how much they vary.  I've so many I haven't watched anyway, that in reality I don't really miss out on watching them earlier as a result of not buying them straight away.

Then again, like all good Rules, I like to apply some common sense,  ignore them when I decide I want to, when it's clear the price isn’t going to drop to an 'acceptable level', or just because I especially like the film or the limited edition for some reason.
