| Posted: | | | | As per Ken's request I'd like to request:
Czechoslovakia East Germany / German Democratic Republic Yugoslavia
I have a lot of children's shows and movies from that country from that era. All these countries have effectively ceased to exist but they're not identical to their successors (GDR became a part of Germany, CZ and YU broke apart). | | | Karsten DVD Collectors Online

Hard as it might be to imagine but the "communist" countries outside the USSR actually were sovereign states (Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, GDR, ... -> sovereign states). The GDR became a country (Oct 7, 1949) from the soviet zone of occupied germany five months after the american/british/french zone became its own country (May 23, 1949). West Germany joined the NATO on May 9, 1955; East Germany the Warsaw Pact on May 14, 1955. In September 1973 both countries joined the United Nations. On October 3, 1990 all of that was over. But if you like we can file all Hollywood productions under Mexico and all New York based productions under United Kingdom. | | | Karsten DVD Collectors Online

My understanding was that the Soviet Union was a confederacy and not really a country, but a look at Wikipedia shows that this isn't exactly correct. |

| Posted: | | | | The USSR was a sovereign state. It had land borders with Norway, Finland, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, China, Mongolia and North Korea. East Germany (DDR) and other East European countries were controlled by the USSR but were independent countries. | | | Cor |

Well, then I want " Deutsches Reich - Weimarer Republik" to enter as CoO for "Metropolis" I think we have to really look hard as how granular we want to make CoO. Sure, we need "East Germany" to distinguish those movies between '49-'90, but is it really necessary to keep track of the successive line of Germanies? The Year of Production will help there, if it was before WW2 it was The Reich, during WW2 Nazi Germany, after WW2 West Germany and after 1990, finally, just "Germany" cya, Mithi | | | Mithi's little XSLT tinkering - the power of XML --- DVD-Profiler Mini-Wiki |

| Posted: | | | | Agreed. And remember: Pre-1990 West-Germany and post-1990 Germany are formally the same state: the Federal Republic of Germany (Bundesrepublik Deutschland); it's the territory that's different. So there's no need for West-Germany. |

My understanding was that the Soviet Union was a confederacy and not really a country, but a look at Wikipedia shows that this isn't exactly correct. You've probably got the Soviet Union mixed up with the so-called Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), which was formed when the Soviet Union broke up. The Soviet Union itself was every bit a country. As all important decisions had to go through Moscow, it even was a more centralized state than the US. |

| Posted: | | | | If we wait a few years, we'll only need Germany, Switzerland, Greece and Scotland to cover all new releases in Europe anyway... | | | Do you ever find yourself striving for perfection with an almost worthless attempt at it? Guttermouth "Lemon Water". Also, I include in my Profiler database VHS tapes, audio DVDs, audio books (digital, cassette and CD), video games (digital, DVD and CD) and 'enhanced' CDs with video tracks on them, as well as films and TV I've bought digitally. So I'm an anarchist, deal with it. Just be thankful I don't include most of my records and CDs etc in it too; don't think I haven't been tempted... |
